Patina v Rust

Sending my FB off to the body and paint shop. Have some rot lower edge of rear hatch from when car sat unused for a decade with the drain ports blocked, and some on the roof where the original owner ran a ski rack. (!)

Defn going ahead with those two items, but should I deal with the inside of the hood? If so, what is best practice for dealing with the original stickers? Would rather not do the hood as other work is very costly….. but would consider it if the experts here said do it.

I know it isn't pretty, but I'd sand that down with a scotch brite and use some POR15 to cover it.

Or how about a perfect medium. Mask off the original stickers and sand the backside of the hood. Find some spray paint as close to the original color as possible, give the hood a few light coats and you should be good. This should make the backside of your hood look better than it does now and be protected from further corrosion. I would do this before you get the rest of the bodywork done though ,there will be overspray.

If it bothers you now, it will probably only stick out more to you after getting other parts of the car redone. That's what usually happens when you clean or improve on parts of your car. It makes the non worked on areas look even worse. Rust never stops, left untouched, eventually it will work its way through to the topside. Probably a good time to to re caulk the reinforcing structure to the hood skin too. Eliminates the tin can ring when shutting the hood.

I'd take some good pictures of the underwood labels first. That way if something happens to them you can have them re made by a local sign maker. Or, there's always places that you can search out.

Excellent ideas. (And totally hear you Banzai... I was an architect for many years and avoided buying any kind of furniture for that exact same reason. Once you have one nice thing, everything else looks horrible). I do everything myself on the car, but believed paint was out of my skill range, but now I see what you guys are saying. Its under the hood so if the resulting paint quality is marginal, then that's OK. Its also a part of the car I can easily remove and work on, without having to worry about adjacent color matching etc. I will see if the body shop will sell me some of the paint they use for the roof and rear window.

For the paint, you get a 2K mixed paint in a spray can that has an activator. It's not cheap, about $30 per can, but it's the same paint that you get from a paint shop, only in a spray can. They mix the paint based on the code and then place it in the can. On the bottom is a plunger you push to release the hardener. They also have a 2K clear that is very nice.

You'll need to loom around for a place that does custom mixing.

Of coarse, if you are not afraid of using a spray gun, that would be the best and like you said, have the body shop make you up a pint/quart along with clear. This is what I'd do. If you did the work on the bottom of the hood, I'm sure it wouldn't cost that much more for them to spray that also.

I've never painted a car or did any meaningful body work but it's a skill I'd like to learn.
