Question Parking brake light

My parking brake light on my 85 GSL-SE will not turn off even though the parking brake is released. It just started doing this today. Any thoughts on how to get the light to work properly??

Check your brake fluid level. This light also comes on if your brake fluid is low.

That's the first thing I'll look at tomorrow morning. Thanks!

While I have a response from you... I have another question. The idle on the car is very erratic, but has alot of power when driving. I read the FAQ about GSL-SE idle problems, but maybe you have some things to look from your experience

What do you mean by erratic? Does the idle surge up and down?

When parked or stopped, it will almost stall out and then surge up a little bit. Then do the same thing. Sometimes it does stall. But like I said. It drives with no problems.

So it sounds like the idle is falling too low (below 800 rpm) and the engine tries to correct (increase idle), but sometimes it doesn't react fast enough and stalls out. I would go ahead and try to adjust the idle (800 rpm) with engine warm and the vent and vacuum solenoids disconnected (the two cylindrical solenoids next to the solenoids with orange and green connectors). The proceedure is given in the Haynes manual as well as the FSM (Factory Service Manual).

You can get the FSM from:
http://www.wankel.net/~krwright/cars/rx7/85_manual.html

Thanks again Kent. I will do that as well tomorrow. I'll let you know if that helps. If not, I will try to pick you brain again! I'm definitely not a mechanic, but I've been learning slowly. Sometimes the manual doesn't show an awful lot.

No problem. We are here to help and to learn from each other. You are correct about the manual. Many times it doesn't state directly what something actually does and when it does it, you have to kind of figure it out by looking at the way each device is tested and try to figure out its role in the overal system.

Good luck. Let us know how it goes. BTW, welcome to the forum.

Kent
