Pam is home

some of you may remember the demise of Pamela, my GSL-SE that went off a mountain about 2 years ago.

Finally done swapping off the performance parts into Carmen, recently certified to drive on Saskatchewan roads.

While Pamela was parked at the garage and parts swapped to Carmen as the latter was getting safetied for certification, someone broke in and tore Pam's dash apart swiping switches, shifter boot, shifter ****, shattering the rear storage bins - hell, they even tried to take the ECU.

The cosmetic stuff such as boot and **** could have been anything, but they were pretty methodical going after the hard-to-find electric stuff, so it looks like the work of a 1st gen owner *sigh*

At least the rest of Pam's remains are in my posession now. I swapped her engine, tranny, (custom) driveshaft, full RB exhaust and swaybars, and a few other odds and sods into the new car which also has front slotted rotors and stainless lines throughout. It was supposed to have slotted rotors all around, but RX-7 Specialties in Calgary sent me one GSL-SE slotted rear and one for a 2nd gen, and when they were still answering my calls refused to correct their mistake.

Pam's seats will be getting a thorough cleaning (bit of blood plus 2 years exposed to the elements) and put into Carmen, and the salvaged rims polished and matched with one replacement.

It's like starting from scratch, but at least I know where it leads

I feel so bad you D'Arcy, and I know your pain. My Elanor met her demise this past spring...

I mean, I know she wasn't as nice as Pam...

Plus, to add insult to injury like that... I really hope you catch the *******...
Well, at least she's home now buddy.

You have my full sympathies...

This is shortly after they pulled Sarah (my wife) and I from the car

This is after the guys flipped her back ove for me... That's me with the bandage on my hand in the backround, behind the car...

Interesting - Pamela dimpled in the rear quarter just in front of the antenna exactly as Elanor did. In fact, much of the damage looks similar, though the hoop formed by the B pillars, in my case, also crushed a bit as the car fell onto boulders in the same upside-down attitude.

Web777, I posted pics of my accident here before - a search might bring 'em up.

I remember the pics... They're gone now... forum blows away old pics

Oddly, Pam crossed my mind as I stood on top of that ditch looking down on my car.

My whole rear chasis deformed. The watts link was bent, the wheels were shifted to the left about 2 inches, and there was extensive warpage all around the rear right of the trunk.
The B pillars themselves, however, didn't move a milimetre...

I imagine your accident was a slight bit more traumatic however. Elanore slid down the ditch on her wheels, and only flipped when she hit bottom.

I'm just glad you and I are here to talk about it.

It's good to see Pam's parts being redone into something even better. I mean:

"Pam dimpled in the rear quarter just in front of the antenna exactly as Elanor did."

Can you get more explict?

I need to meet this Eleanor. Or Carmen. Would that be Carmen Electra, you know, that girl? If you're ever down Atlanta way, stop on by and bring them along. I'm sure my wife will understand.

Happy Motoring Manntis! (And send some pictures).

Ray

actually yeah - since the last car was named after its former driver, Pam Anderson, someone suggested I name the replacement after Carmen Electra. I think Directfreak was the 1st to say it.

So, SMNC, you must have been on a RX7 club drive, based on the number of Gen2 cars in the background.

What happened?

Well, it was at our annual Ottawa meet. We were on the cruise along a lot of nice curvy country roads.

I had my newly tricked-out Elanor (ported engine-just broken in, CP big brakes, CP steering)...
I was doing great and almsot keeping up with the big boys (FD's, TII's and an RX-8) all day.

Anyways, I was going into a corner and realized I was going a bit fast... stupid rookie mistake, I tapped the brakes. Just for an instant, without even thinking.
By the time I realized my mistake, the tail had started to break loose.

I started to recover, but I ran out of road just as I regained control, and the front wheels touched the shoulder. Another 6 inches and I would have been okay...

That was the end of that.
Slid down the embankment, hit the bottom and rolled.

It only takes a TINY mistake for a milisecond to end up in the ditch.

Well, I've learned from it. With my new car, my #1 priority is suspension and traction.

Oh yeah, and NOT TOUCH THE BRAKES IN A CORNER.... god I'm an idiot...

But yeah EVEYONE pulled over, the guys in front came back.

Got me and my wife out of the car, and rolled it right side up. Gave us some first aid, got a tow truck... The folks on this forum are amazing.
Of course most of the folks left before the cops came... but that's just common sense. A couple people stayed with us, Amur_ and Aaron Cake among them...
MyRxBad gave us a ride...

Lucky thing tho, the cops had a speed trap up ahead for us, but by the time everyone got there, nobody was speeding...

I was afraid that was the story...I'm surprised that none of the DFW "cruises" on 635 have ended up with a balled-up RX-7...

D'oh!! Freeserver shut down the link for the pics...they were there 10 minutes ago and now it's a bunch of blue boxes!!

Hey, don't forget about me. I was the FB directly in front of you (the closest FB to the front and the one who pulled the rest of the guys back )

To both of you guys Spencer and D'arcy: I'm glad you both made it out alright and kept going with your Rx7s. As odd as it sounds, your crashes have been important to me both as lessons on careful driving and also as assurance that if my car were to ever flip I'd be alright. It makes me feel safe to know that both of you guys made it out with practically no damage to yourselves (or in Spencer's case, his passenger either).

My goodness, has it been 2 years already Manntis? My how time flies. I wasn't even modded back then!

Jon

Edit: for those interested, I'm the guy to the left of the overturned car in smnc's second pic. The one holding the camera and pouch. There, you can now put a blurry face to me

Holy crap Jon, I can't believe I forgot to mention you!

Yeah, you were right there with me after the stop at the gas station...

Also, if case I didn't say it before, thanks for the pics...

From: Behind a workbench, repairing FC Electronics.
I have pics of Pamela's wreck and I'm saving pics of smnc's wreck as a tribute to the strength of the RX-7's body... (I've also got a pic of a Silver 1st gen with a 12A with cold air intake box instead of the traditional Blue air cleaner... I'm not sure who's it is.)

I sawzalled an FC apart not too long ago.

http://www.3geeks.org/pele/CarStuff/eyesore/

There are 4-5 layers of steel in the B pillars and like 3 in the A pillars. I went through a blade on each side (One A pillar and one B pillar) and had to recharge the batteries in the sawzall twice to get through the B pillars. The FB can't be too much different. Mazda knew what they were doing.

yeah - remember I flipped upside down onto mountain bolders and the B-pillar hoop, though deformed, still left ample room for my head and torso to survive.

Buckle up, boys & girls.

Can't ague that... Your seats survived intact, right?

My passenger bent, and my drivers broke at the right side hinge...

Manntis - sorry to hear about the new setback. Sad that it would be another Rx owner.

Spencer - That is a horrible crash, I'm glad you and your wife are ok. When did this happen? what speed do you think you were roughly doing?

The main thing is cars and metal can be repaired, lives cannot. glad to see you're healthy.

Well, about 80kph into the corner; but seing as I was trying to keep the car on the road, I'm not 100% sure, but I would estimate about 60kph when we started into the ditch.

It happened end of May...

And yeah, the car is gone, but I live to wrench another day...

Much like our friend Manntis...
