Paint Options
Well I have officially owned my Rex for seven days now and am trying to decide on paint. Thoes of you who have seen the pictures can't deny the excellent condition of my original paint. However, due to the underside radiant heat from the engine and the UV heat from the sun, the hood is a little faded. Rather than try to make the hood match the 23 yr old paint I have decided to strip the car and paint the entire vehicle, aside from the engine bay...for now that is.
I am trying to decide on an excellent color. I really like the Sunset Orange used on the Fbodies. It is also sometimes called burnt orange, or Hugger orange. If you go to good images and type in sunset orange you will see why I like it.
How many of you fellas (sorry Kim) have removed your black rubber side molding that runs down the length of the car? I am debating wheather or not to leave them in tact. I am also considering spot welding the badges holes on the sides and rear, however I do not want to do dishonor to the RX-7. This is still something I am debating. If anyone has an excellent color option let me hear it. Pictures are appreciated.

I've seen a dual color grey/black one with the molding removed. It really does help. I agree with you on the orange. One day I saw a beautiful C6 'Vette in metallic copper and instantly knew what color I wanted my car to be.

If you stay with the original color, then you won't have the stigma of mismatched engine bay, door jams, etc...
Personally, I would wait before everything else you may possibly want to do is finished. Nothing is worse than accidentaly screwing up a brand new paint job when you are working on the car. Also, decide first if you are going to add any parts to the car (wind, air dam, etc.)...

I too am considering a paint job. I want to stick with the original "tan" but have not been able to track down the color name. I can have it matched to what it is now, however the sun has taken it's toll. If anyone happens to know the color name, please let me know.
Also, I have the worthless targa top but have grown to like the look. The stainless band is in good condition but the fiberglass (I think?) is badly faded and has some chips. Any ideas on bringing it back to life?? And if that is too difficult, does anyone know how to remove it without screwing up the top?? Any and all advice appreciated!

Mine will either be going back to the original black, or to a velocity red. My body is pretty damn straight except two small door dings on the passenger side.
That's my ride, but the paint is slightly faded on top(enamel).

i personally like black, silver, and blue on these cars although white looks really good too. i have removed the side moldings on my 83GS (silver) and i like it much better without them...but to each his own...if you remove them however, prepare to sit there with a bottle of goo gone or something similar for a while...that adhesive is some tough shnit

Rx7's were only offered in a small variety of colors. I have seen many different changes by people and now know why they only came in certain colors. IMHO I don't feel that loud colors compliment the lines or styling of the vehicle.
On one of my previous Se's I removed the side mouldings, haad all the emblems removed and holes filled, and Had the sidemarkers removed and the openings filled. I had the car painted Torch Red which was the Corvette red at the time.
The Se that I have now someone had already removed the mouldings and emblems but left the side markers in place.
Ray, there is a thread somewhere in this section that has alot of pictures of sevens and different colors. I beleive it started off with a title such as, Post up pictures of your ?
IMHO Ray, the hugger orange/burnt orange is a great color for a Muscle car but I personally would not recommend it on a Seven of any year. Just my nickels worth.

Thanks for your Input Doc. I may just go with a deep lusterous black like I have on my WS6. I thought about a black primer but that would only be a major Dis to this community. Oh, btw, the 11 sec fbod...

I have seen the clear lenses and it is not quite what I am looking for. I am not near my car but it appears as if the side markers mount into the moulding. If the black side mouldings are removed it seems that they will not sit flush with the body of the vehicle. I will keep looking though as I wont see my Rex until the weekend.

I've inlculded some pics so you could see the FB with out mouldings and also no sidemarkers. Then no mouldings with sidemarkers.

Mine will get the treatment eventually.......but that will be the very last thing.

Damn, THAT'S your WS6? Wow, I thought it was the older version. Yeah, that's the style of F-Bodies that I love. The dual-nostril hood really adds to the flair of the car's attitude.
As far as the lenses, I myself am planning on flush mounting the lenses into the car's body once I remove the side trim. Why not go that route?
