Depends. SOmetimes they wont be hurt by a short overheating, sometimes they will. Just fix it and keep an eye out for any coolant loss.

It's over. Sell the car to some poor schmoe who doesn't know what happened.

Yes - you could have damaged the car - as with any car that over heats. But the rotory is especially sensitive to heat, so be very careful with the water and oil. You'd probably be best served to stop the car should it get to the high side of the gauge - and figure out why it's overheating. Don't keep driving it, unless you're being chased by some crazed chainsaw wielding maniac (like a bad movie, you wouldn't get far anyway with an overheating RX anyway).

I agree with RX7Carl - fix the hose, fill the water up - and start it up with your fingers crossed.

I'm of the opinion that you're probably fine, as I've been in your shoes before. Heck, I've even lost all my engine oil on the highway once thanks to a broken oil cooler line. You did the right thing, and pulled over as soon as you noticed it.

Like RX7Carl said, it's a roll of the dice, sometimes you win, and sometimes you lose. I figure you'll be fine.

I overheated my 85 about 2 years after I got it. That engine lasted for another 70,000 miiles before dying early this year. Like everyone is saying, it's a crap shoot. Depending on how long it was overheating, you've definitely shortened its life - the question is by how much?
