Outsourcing Rabbit GTI R/P

K... I want the J.Oliver/CP Racing Rack and pinion kit... But if I'm gonna get it, I want the GTI rack...

Everywhere online I can find has Rabbit racks with the following options:

Manual Steering, Manual Tranny
Manual Steering, Slushbox
Wussy Steering, Manual Tranny
Wussy Steering, Slushbox

I see no option for the Rabbit GTI...

There is no selection for Non Rabbit GTI before 1985.

I found the same thing. No matter what database I looked in (Autozone, OReilly, PepBoys, Advance)...they only showed the stock rack.

My thought (total speculation) is that the mass marketers don't bother to stock/reman the GTI rack due to low demand. I bet a real auto parts store and VW dealerships carry them.

CPRacing had exact numbers on the ratio, etc., so it wasn't like they were making it up.

In any case, I went to the local pick'n'pull and yanked two. I will get new bellows boots for $6, new tie-rod boots for $3, and clean them up...much cheaper, at least to try it out.

3 more weeks and I can order my first kit!

I haved a GTI rack from an 84 BUT, it's what's called an "A2" aluminum body style rack which will NOT work with the CP Racing kit. Be sure to get the steel body "A1" rack.

Just by looking at them can you tell which is which? Are they marked? Just in case I need to goto the place that has someone else pull **** for you... They don't like jacks in the yard, lawsuits and ****... I know there is a distinct difference between steel and aluminium, but whoever pulls the rack for me might not...

How different is the Aluminium rack? Might it fit the CP/J.O kit with some minor mods? Aluminium is nice and light.

I suspect the same thing... Unfortunately, I don't have a core rack around, hence I don't wanna pay $400 for the rack itself... Scrap yards charge just slightly below new part costs around here...

Lookin for the cheapest rack I can get without a core, but not an unknown rack... I dunno if the previous owner of the scrap car swapped in a cheap standard rack or really has the GTI rack... Ya know...

*grumble*

Maybe I should just stick with the standard Rabbit rack.

That is what I finally decided...to just go with the standard rack. I found two at a pick'n'pull for $25 each.

Basically, if they are good and I can clean them up great. If not, I will use them as the core.

After I heard what Chris & Co. said about the difference between the GTI and standard racks, I seriously doubt I would be able to tell the difference. If I ever stumble across one in a salvage yard though...I'll grab it.

Good luck,

Proof?, well as soon as I buy one I will post a picture. And buddy I am no newbie, I just spend 80% of my time in the garage, under my lift, not on the computer (no offense bro). But I just wanted to let people in on great deal. I will order one and show pictures as soon as my budget allows, gotta get my CP mounting kit first.

That's a pretty good price. but its not less than a rebuilt one. ive looked around, the best price ive found is $154 at RockAuto.com. They list the same part number for the GTI and base rack, so that sucks...

I think 82Transam is reffering to you being new on the forum. not implying that you dont know anything about cars.

Yea calm down, like maguire said i meant to the forum as in no one here knows you so they can't verify the info. Anyway, if what you say is true and there is a good supply of the racks that would kick some major ***.
