Opinions please

Ok if you havn't read my last thread, err don't bother, I'll explain here.

I was having trouble with a high idle problem, and I've found the cause. My carb is err pooched. To explain this is lay-mans terms, throttle rood, the one that opens the primarys is loose. Basically, if I grab a hold of it, I can move it up and down, actually a fair bit. I can make the car idle realyl nice, like new, if I pull up as hard as I can, but of course thats really hard when driving.

So given that I need a new carb, I'm wondering what should I do. I have a spare carb right now that I can rebuild (err maybe never done one before) and put on the car.

Or I could find a performance carb, put that on, and have more fun.

Or I could swap to a 13b engine and use that, which has always been the plan, but there things like body work and suspension I would have liked to do first. However, there is a wreaked 90 RX7 sitting at the insurance place right now, and for about the same price as a new peformance carb.

So I have a problem, 3 options really.

I could use the car as is with the wreaked carb, and hope it holds together untill I can rebuild my spare. Not that cost is a factor, time and willpower is though.

I could upgrade to a bigger and better carb straight way, cause I need more power.

Or I could swap out to a 13b. But its not a turbo, and I'd like a turbo, faster is better, and I believe (not certain) that a rotery engine is like all others, it easier to get big boost on an engine that orginally came with a turbo, lest thats been my experance.

Anyways, looking for some advice right now. But you should know, its not my daily driver. I'm actually happy to leave it sit there for a while untill it either goes faster, or looks better then my truck. As of right now it does niether.

If you are concidering an S5 swap, pay attention to eveything Steve84GS, says about it. He has probably the most successful and dependable S5 swap here. His is turbo but much of the install is the same.

An NA will make use of boost better, to a point, due to the higher compersion rotors. Tuning is more critical on boosted NAs.

If you have the 3Ts, time, talent and tools, the swap would be a good route to go if you can source the engine and related parts. If you pick it up, get the entire car and salvage everything you need off of it. S5 tail lights, in good condition, can bring upwards of $250 to help offset costs.

If you do decide to turbo the S5 NA, you will need the turbo harness, ecu and associated parts, or go standalone.

The switch from a carbed engine to an FI one has it's pitfalls, study extensively before you make the commitment.

If you want a rebuilt carb, they can be found easy enough if you don't feel comfortable doing it yourself. I have spares and can rebuild one for you if you are interested.

Well as for the swap, I have the tools, no talent, but I can buy that with beer. I lease part of a building, the other part turns out to be a shop, which works well for me as I have 4 mechanics only a case of beer away.

But the situation is kinnda a let down. I put a bunch of time, and money into this. And expected a car that ran, and handled, like new, or better then new. Then eventually, to a high horse power machine as the last step. Always been a fan of rx7's...

But I'm wondering where the readship them selves would go with this. If they had to choose between the options given to them, at least in the short term, which one would they choose?

Each has thier draw-backs. A rebuilt carb, cost me either money or time, niether of which I feel compeled to give up to make the car only slightly better, as it does ok now.

A performance carb, is a fair bit of coin, for somthing I'm not sure I want. While I know you can make a 12a put out lots of power, its easier in general with a larger engine, and one that has parts readily availible. As an example, I waited a week to get spark plugs in, and I don't live in the back woods, its just hard to find parts for a 20-25 year old car, that started out wierd enough when new.

Or the engine swap. Well something I seriously considered anyways. However, at a later time, and with more money to do it properly. Not that doing it right now is going to break me. However, it would be nice to have everthing all at once, and done all at the same time. I'd rather make a large leap, then make small steps, if you know what I mean.

And there's also some little things to look at. Wheels and tires for example. Or a paint job would be nice. The car looks ok now, but its not going to take much to make it WOW.

Meh, I'll eventually figure out what to do, its my car after all. Put input from people who have own these things longer then I have, and know more then I do would be nice. So if you could do one of the three (or four I guess) things I've mentioned, pick one, and explain why.

Check into a Sterling carb if you decide to hold off on the engine swap.
