Only Runs on Starter Fluid

Ok 1985 Gsl 12a. Compression good on all faces. Car will start backfire, die, and flood unless we put starter fluid in and dont hit the gas. It will run forever if we keep spraying the starter fluid. We get white smoke everytime it floods.

What do you think? I think it HAS to be carb.

If the carb is flooding, it could be a stuck needle valve. Could also be a bad air vent solenoid. Mine went bad and before I removed it I got the car flooded so bad white smoke came out the muffler for 10 minutes. I thought it was on fire and pushed it away from the garage By that time, I was so frustrated with it, I HOPED it was on fire!

Also we clamped the fuel line and we ran it with starter fluid untill all the gas was gone and now the smoke seems to be blue like oil smoke insted of white gas smoke!

On a Nikki carb, the air (bowl) vent solenoid is under the inlet/outlet gas line. It has a 12 volt lead connected to it. When 12v is off, it vents the bowl to the purge valve. When 12v is on it vents the bowl into the carb. When its not working, it can cause strange flooding problems. Its purely an emmissions control and can be removed without affecting carb performance. Mine plauged me for months before I figured it out. Search and there are better explanations, and procedure for diagnosing it and also for removing it.
