What color is the smoke? Is it blue and smell like oil? Is it white and smell like gas? If it is number two, then adjust the air/fuel mixture screw to run a bit more on the lean side. It could also just be because the engine is old, a lot of our older engines smoke on start up, and its mostly due to oil burning.

However, if it is white and smell like coolant, you may have some serious problems. How long have you owned the car, and have you had it running before the carb rebuild?

If it just started happening after you rebuilt the carb, then most likely its the A/F mixture screw as Normality glitch said. It could also be a sign that something is sticking, or that you didnt re-attach the plug for the vent solenoid.

Did you take the manifold off as well when you rebuilt the carb? I have had some issues with bad O-rings/intake gaskets...but that would seem a bit odd if it only happens for 5-10 seconds on startup.

Does it matter how long the car has been sitting for when you restart it? If the amount of smoke is different depending on the length of time its been sitting, I would make sure that when you shut the car off, that the carb isnt dumping all the rest of the fuel its got into the engine, as this would cause a similar symptom.
Let us know as much about the problem as you possibly can, and it will be easier to diagnose.

Some members have gotten good results with Lucas Heavy Duty Oil Stabilizer reducing oil smoke from oil that gets passed the oil control rings.

If you are getting smoke only on startup, and didn't have it before the carb rebuild, go back, check your work and determine whether the smoke is from coolant, oil or raw fuel.

If it's oil, check the oil level, make sure you didn't over fill. Coolant, you may need to pull the intake and replace the o-rings. Fuel, check the levels in both float bowls.
