omp worrying me
omp worrying me
hey i have an 82 gsl with the stock nikki right now i just bought a OER 45 to put on and i have planned on just running premix but when i was reading how to block off the omp i saw that there is suppose to be a linkage going up to the carb but there is not one and i can't tell if the lines have oil running throught them right now or not i have had this car for almost two years with no problems could the omp be set open or something because it seems like if i didn't have the proper lub on the apex seals they would have blown by now so my question is should i go ahead and start running premix?
thanks in advance for your input

You can run with out the omp if you block it off to make it look pretty and free up space... and run pre mix
You can leave the omp there closed not give a damn how it looks in your engine bay and run pre-mix
You can wire the linkage open and get constant running oil all the time...
Or get a new omp for your year make and model with the linkage, properly hook it up to your carb and be done with the whole issue...

If I remember correctly, the linkage to the OMP is used to increase the oil flow as the throttle is opened. There has to be some way of increasing the output of the OMP to match the engine revs, and I am pretty sure that's what the linkage was/is for. So, you were likely only getting enough oil for 750-1000 rpms if your linkage was disconnected. I would recommend switching to premix fuel ASAP, and block off that OMP.
I for one hate the way that Mazda did the OMP, because I think it is too easy for it to fail without anyone knowing. The lines are much too brittle and most people don't even know why they are there, so they don't think to ever check them.
Here's to hoping that your 12A is ok, and lives a long, full, and happy life.

yeah i didn't know what they were for but when i took off the carb the first time they cracked luckily i had some on my other rx that is totaled and sitting in my back yard but i guess i am going to start with premix at my next fill up i don't understand though i have been driving this car daily and auto crossing once a month for the last two years with out the omp working properly i would have thought it would have blown by now but i am not complaning and hopefully i haven't shortend the life of my engine which is suppose to only have about 60 k from the last rebuild

Run the test as outlined in the FSM, or Haynes. Make sure they aren't working properly before you switch to premix. It's a very intelligent system and unless you need to you really shouldnt disable it. The only problem is that no one really ever checks it to see if its working and then when they fail it's all so shocking.
