Oil ... yes ... an oil thread

So, I've been reading and reading and reading aaaaall there is to read in the debate between synthetics and mineral based oil.

I like the idea of switching to a synthetic, but I am still nervous for one reason.

Pretty much all of the articles and evidence convinced me that's it's going to be perfectly fine ... except for one thing.

Racing beat says this:
http://www.racingbeat.com/mazda/perf...etic-oils.html
There is the potential for problems if you change to synthetic oil after years of using mineral oil in an older, high-mileage rotary engine. These problems are two-fold. First, synthetics sometimes cause rubber seals to swell after years of immersion in mineral oil, and second, synthetics tend to be high-detergent by their nature, so changing to synthetics after many years of mineral oil use can cause beneficial sealing carbon deposits to be scoured away, leading to higher oil consumption.
Since my 7 is an 80LS with 54k original miles ... even though it's not high mileage, it's definitely in the 'older' category.

Should I avoid switching like the plague or not be concerned ... anyone?

stick with conventional, im rebuilding mine soon sticking with conventional for break in and 3000 miles after, then goin synthetic. that would be the only way i would, after a rebuild only. the reason im doing 4000 miles on conventional is to wear in the build then synthetic for less wear, same with rebuilt trannys.

My dad had 2 rx-4s and he said never put synthetic in a rotary. Another good reason not to put synthetic in is that our cars burn alot of oil and synthetic is too damn expensive to burn away like that.
