Oil smoke coming out the wazoo.....

Hey guys, I'm back with another problem with my car... I start her up, she smokes bad, I let her run on choke for the normal time, then kick down the idle. After idleing for ~2 minutes, it's puffing a little smoke every exhaust pulse. Then, after idleing, I tap the gas and POOF... BIG smoke screen... Then it continues to smoke, and smoke, and smoke. It gets worse as the car warms up.

My questions...

#1 - What are the only places oil can get into the combustion chamber, in order from most common to least common?

#2 - Will the complete (rubber) seal kit from the mazda dealer fix all of the places oil could be leaking from?

#3 - If #2 is false, what else do I need on top of the rebuild kit.

Thanks a lot!

Jeff

if it is oil, then your seels or o-rings are probably bad. that would definatly require a complete tear down to fix, but new seals would probably do it. how many miles are on your engine? if you have it completely apart, you might want to look at just doing a rebuild then too.. that way you donot have to later down the road.... good opertunity to port it too....

k, it's definately blue smoke, it's oil, and the engine has around 125,000 orignal kilometres on it (I dunno, maybe 65,000 miles or something?). I just re-did the rear rotor's apex seals due to them being jammed down by a piece of rag (don't ask), but I didn't tear the whole thing down, just the rear plate. However, when I put it all back together, I didn't replace any of the seals, just the big water housing seals with gasket maker. So, my question being: will buying the $180 (canadian) rubber rebuild kit with all the o-rings in it, and an oil-pan gasket in it and installing it fix all of the potential oil leaking problems? Or do I have to buy other seals (like the rotor oil seals)?

Jeff

EDIT: Forgot to add.... I'm not too worried about the engine lasting too long, because I'm off to university in a bit, and I may have to sell the car. Plus, if I only put 20,000 kms on it every summer, it'll last 5 years if the engine lasts for 100,000kms. By then I might have enough spare cash to drop in a 13BT

I'm pretty sure it's not water smoke, 'cause I had that problme before with the intake - one of the water o-rings was bad so I got the two new o-rings and the intake gasket from the mazda dealer. When I refer to the big water housing seals, I meant the water jacket seals in between the sections of the motor itself.

So are you saying it's not the oil o-rings, its the water jacket seals? I don't see any coolant loss, bubling rad, or white smoke, just blue... but I'm not sure. Maybe I'll take some pics tomorrow with the digital camera (good one) so you guys can decide on a colour...

Last time I order one it came with every rubber and gasket you need. Minus the ones for the O Seals in the rotors those are extra...

The way I see it, you should do a complete rebuilt while you have the engine apart. It doesn't make sense to change a couple seals and not the others. Some will keep on breaking and you'll do 3 rebuilts to get everything right.

So, I would replace all seals, hoses that you didn't do last time. It's probably a couple hundred bucks more of parts but at least you know the job is done.

Before tearing down the engine, check the flow on your Oil Metering Pump first. Maybe it's stuck open and feeding too much oil to the engine?! Your Mazda factory manual has a proceedure for doing this. Hey, ya never know..... if that's the problem the fix is probably less than 20 bucks.

Cool, well I'll try the oil metering pump test, and if it's not that I guess I'll rebuild it and replace all the rubber. I was under the impression that you could use gasket maker on the water jacket seals, but I guess not.

Thanks for the help.

Ugh, don't say side seal.... I don't have quite that much money right now... only enough for a quick overhaul (rubber stuff)... If it's a side seal... anyone want a 1979 RX-7 without a motor? Cheap.

K, Update... I got pictures of the smoke coming from my car today... Whaddya think? What color is it? This pic is at idle, so imagine what happens when it does this for 5-10 minutes and then I step on it

ok, 2 days ago mine just smoked like you wouldn't believe, looked like the atf treat, but I didn' do that. then when it went away the car has run better and cleaner then ever. Keap your does it all the time, hmm. well for me I went 2-3 weeks of that then it all went away and runs real good. Doesn't even smell real bad anymore. I haven't a clue as to what happened, but maybe you are experiencing the same thing.
