Oil Pressure Spike on 1st start
I have a freshly rebuilt S5 NA engine with a GSL-SE front cover. The engine is a hand-me-down from a friend, so I do not know all the details that lay inside. I believe it has a T2 oil pump and probably a high pressure oil pressure regulator, but 100 psi on start up? Yikes, that is the top end of my gauge, what do you think causes this?
A problem with the bypass in the front cover?
Is the high pressure regulator supposed to keep it at 100 psi?
Some thing else?
Thanks

Thats about right for a combination of several factors.......cold oil,TII pump and possibly modified regulator. My S5 TII engine is set for 100psi and I get that on a cold startup.Itll taper down to 70-80 once things are up to temp........thats on the stock gauge too.Although mine have been calibration checked, they can hardly be called reliably accurate.Stock gauges and senders fluctuate a lot due to crud on the connectors and age.You can check your gauge calibration with some 5 cent resistors from Radio Shack.

Just keep an eye on the oil cooler, cooler lines and any other potential leak areas. They are more likely to leak or fail outright due to age, with the additional pressure.

Accelerated chain wear is a problem on very high pressure systems as well, but 100psi max, is typically considered to be acceptable.
If you ever NEEDED higher, constant oil pressure, your likely to be tearing down engines on a regular basis. In which case, regular oilpump chain replacement is just another standard proceedure.
