I'm not sure that the temp diff would be large, or that it would vary. The cooling system should stabilize the temp, s, given vigorous oil flow thru the engine, it should settle down quickly after any peak or valley. I'll try to find a way to do it, tho, and maybe test the theory with one of those remote temp test instruments, like the Fluke 62.

A temp probe in the oil pan or the IR reading from it should suffice for the pre-cooler measurement. Keep in mind that stopping to take an IR temp reading will skew the true variance from the guage reading.
