Question Oil Leak

In addition to the 85 GSL-SE I just bought I also own a 85 base model with a 12A in it. Can anyone tell me what the part is called that the the oil filter screws into? Is it the oil flange or something. I know this is a stupid question. What ever it's called I can see oil leaking from the bottom of it. Is there a gasket or something that I can buy to repair this part? The car has 147000 miles on it but runs fairly good and I don't want to have the motor ruined because of some stupid leak. Please help. I'm new to this forum but have found alot of awesome information and I really appreiate the feedback. One more thing...where can I get an electric fan to replace the stock one on my 85 13B? or is that even a good idea?...

You mean the oil cooler?

You can try to replace the O rings that are a possible cause of your leak. That or even the whole banjo pipe replaced.

You can get plenty of e fans out there.. check out any local rotary place or do a search here, it's been covered a lot. Tons of people get a e-fan from an old car and do a convert

Agreed, the problem is most likely that your O-rings are bad. Unless the banjo bolt has been taken off and put back on without replacing the crush washers...

Its no big deal though to change those Orings... Very straight forward

Its not the oil cooler, the SE's had a front mount style.

But, it is the 2 O-rings under the oil filter pedestal, and its very straight forward to do as Dan said.

Correct me if I'm wrong, I believe the bolts that you need to remove are either 8mm or 10mm as well, FYI.

I guess he's talking about the Beehive cooler....You'll need four o-rings for the bottom of it....not sure of the size, but their part number would be 9954-10-1601 Lot5E10 from Mazda

12A oil cooler leak

Replacing the o-rings is straightforward but not quick and easy. The banjo bolt
is 23mm, I went to Sears and bought a wrench for it. only way I could get the job done was to be going under the car and back out several times. the old o-rings will bbe crusted on there. Two o-rings go between the cooler and housing flange, and another two go between the "sandwich" layers of the cooler. You can get the right o-rings and crush washers from Mazdatrix, or from Lowe Performance in Sarasota Fla.

Here is a thread from the 1st gen archive about this very subject, and it even has a few pics.
BTW, there are 2 nuts under the cooler, and 1 bolt under the "Rats nest" holding the cooler to the motor, along with the large banjo bolt previously mentioned.
A total of 4 o-rings are needed, 2 between the cooler and motor, and 2 between the cooler base and the cooler itself. Just don't forget the crush washers for the banjo bolt, or it will likely leak from there after reinstallation.
