a forum member and i were discussing this today. they live in california and they said they do it with noticeable results. they dont replace the coolant/water with oil, they just add a small amount of oil to the mix. i plan on putting this to a test when i get my car together at the end of this month. ill run it for some time with coolant and water, and then after a while add a little oil and see what happens. i plan on posting my results.

Oil and water homogenize into a goo when mixed in the cooling system, I don't see how this could aid in any cooling. Buy yourself a bottle of Water Wetter and reduce the the antifreeze portion of your cooling mix. Uou will get better results and not have to clean out your cooling system.

thats what my initial plan was and after some thinking i decided to stick with that idea. i dont want the oil to junk up my water jackets. it may not cause immediate problems, but im sure it has the potential to on down the road.

Water has about twice the heat capacity of oil. Water takes 1 btu to raise 1 pound 1 degree F (1 BTU/lb F). Most oils are around 0.5 BTU/lb F. So pound for pound you can remove 2x the heat with water than oil. The heat transfer is also better into water than oil. If you were designing a heat exchanger to use oil as the coolant, there would have to be more area to transfer the same amount of heat. Oils (silicon based compounds)are sometimes used where the temperatures are too high to make using water practical or even possible.

i dropped about 15 degrees in my supra running nothing but water and water wetter, compared to running anti-freeze. oil in water sounds like a bad plan to begin with...

I remember reading, someone used a VERy light oil to cool there car instead of water. I think it was mentions in a rx7 book... RX7 performance Handbook? by Mike Ancas? It was just a brife mentioning. Nothing lik the link above. Anyone uses that stuff let me know how it turns out.

Wink Oil In Your What????

Make sure what ever you use, to first flush your system with some TIDE and only water. A cup is enough. Try it in your buddys car first. You'll love it.

Just remeber that anti-freeze not only lowers the freezing point, but also increases the boiling point of water. Not only that but acts as a lubricant to help extend the life of the water pump. On the street I don't see why people get so concerned about coolant temperatures. On the track yes, street not so much. I think if you are running hot day-to-day you need to address something other than running striaght water....

or oil.
