I've been trying to get my 84's oil cooler off and I can not - for the life of me - get to the last 14mm bolt.

The pic shows a representation of the location of the bolt (firewall, inboard, bottom).

I've tried every extension, socket, ratchet ; can't get the angle. What am I doing wrong?

Someone was talking about bending an old 14mm and reaching down from the top with it.

 

Might be easier to come from the bottom of the car with a ratcheting wrench.

 

This was the first project I did when I got my RX-7. Pretty sure I came from the bottom with a LONG extension. Helps to disconnect the coolant lines ahead of time obviously. But honestly, I struggled with it so long, I couldn't even tell you how I eventually got it off haha.

 

i used a socket with six inch extension from the top.

 

Hi Phineas, were you ever able to get that oil cooler off? I’m struggling with the same thing on my ‘84 (pretty sure the o rings are leaking oil).

 

Yes, I did.

It was as difficult as I made it sound.

You just have to stick with it; it was brutal.

I got used a ratchet angle extender to help get me to a few.

 

I'll second that! I fought it hard and considered quitting several times.

I finally broke it down into smaller operations. I found working too long got me frustrated.

 

Hey thanks guys for the response. I’ve also come to the conclusion that I need to break it down into smaller steps or I would get too frustrated. Currently it’s up on jack stands with coolant connections undone. Waiting for me to get remaining tools/parts…..
