Oil consumption

How often should the oil and filter be changed? The manual says every 10,000km [6500miles], my mchanic books the car in for service every 5,000km or 3 months.

Various threads say oil consumption is required to keep the seals lubricated. Is this correct and if so why is it different from a non-rotor?

What should be the typical oil consumption? At the moment I am using a pint [500mls] every 2,500 miles.
At that time the existing oil looks as clear as it went in. So far I have never seen the engine blow smoke even on a cold start-up. Standard cold start is two minutes minimum warm up until the guage shows life.
