occassional loud rattling with a loose of power

my friend has a first gen with some mods, that i will post after stating the problem. sometimes the car will form a very loud rattling noise and there will be a major loose of power when the noise occurs. it gets louder with rpms.

we have raced the car before and it doesnt do it. i think its only when the cars gets warmer. i ran the car at the strip and not once did this problem occur. at the track we let it sit for some time before we ran it though. just recently we tried to do a street run with the car against a car i KNEW i could beat(another friends prelude). the time slips proved i could win. but i got waxed everytime. the noise was present everytime also. to get to where we raced at was a kind of long drive which would have heated up the car some. the last run we did i smoked the quelude off the line and had a good 2 car jump on him. the gap stayed pretty much the same until i shifted into third and the noise just got loud as heck and it could feel a major loose in power. at which point he went flying by me.

i know this has to be something in the drivetrain. my guesses are flywheel, clutch or driveshaft. its a loud metal on metal noise and when i was first told about it i just assumed it be something simple like a broke exhaust hanger or something.

any help would be GREATLY appreciated.

the car was a car i previously posted about, the title of the thread was something like "estimating track time."

the car sat for about 5 or so years, but only has 62k original miles. it was started back up about a year or so ago and this is the only major problem it has, so wed really like to get this fixed.

i planned on buying the car when the original owner was selling it but my friend got to it before me, now i am glad seeings that i dont know how big of a deal this problem is. the current owner is a and chooses to put his money into "herbal treatment" rather than the car, so i figured id save this 7 and figure out what the problem is myself.

heres a list of mods incase you hadnt seen the previous thread:

weber carb with intake
no emmissions
RB header and RB exhaust
RB flywheel and RB pressure plate with center force clutch
RB plug wires

I just put a little too much advance on mine today, and on the way to work if I floored it at mid to high rpms it really did sound like a bunch of marbles shooting around. I'll bet you just need to give the dizzy a little twist and you'll be all set. Good luck!

hmm.. if this bag of marbles sound is what kentetsu says it is you may have to kiss your motor goodbye.. I heard that noise when my carb died, and after i rebuilt the carb the apex seals shot right out of the exaust ports, well, what was left of them did.
do the marbles come when you floor it, or spool up the motor to insane revs? only? then its gotta be detonation...*shudder*

Mine detonated at 4K whether the secondaries were open or not. It also did it whether it was at WOT or not. That is how I knew it was timing and not a fuel delivery problem.

hell detonation ROX!!! before i swapped in my good 12a to my current current car i locked the dizzy at full advance on the old motor! AAHAHAHHA it was awesome! ****** detonated all the time and i just kept my foot to the floor. that motor still ran good when i pulled it out. WOOOT!

but yea, it's probably timing related. just back off the dizzy some and add a shot of nitrous.

Okay, one other possibility. I adjusted my timing but can't get rid of the noise. However, I just went through the deflooding procedure this weekend and can't find new plugs right now, so I'm pretty sure my issue is that the plugs are fouled. Might want to check that out if the timing is correct.
