Observed gas mileage

I just checked my mileage after not driving my '83 for a while, and got 15.5 mpg. Seems a little low to me. The engine and exhaust are stock, with original cat and air pump. The engine is also rebuilt from Mazda with about 6k miles on it.

What are you guys getting?

woyzeck, ive heard of properly tuned 12a's getting 25+ mpg

id say do a FULL service tune up

Plugs, Cap, Rotor, Wires, Fuel filter, Oil change and filter, Set the timing, Dial in the carbeurator, clean the carbuerator really good, and rebuild it in the near future

you should be set

Mine's running good and strong but super rich too. I think my ACV needs replacing. If it's tuned right and still getting poor mileage, then there has to be something wrong.

best i was getting was 25+mpg. WORST ever on my GSL-SE was when i filled the car to the brim, started it, drove about 3km, then raced a 1/4mile, then back 3km, then filled up again. not the most accurate, but i got 17mpg. Also, along the 3km, I was raggin on it as well .

I've been getting somewhere around 17 these days. My car runs a bit rich, and most of my driving is stop-and-go.

you know those of you who are getting poor mileage with rebuilt motors should think about getting a high-flowing cat, my friends 85 SE gets 28mpg with a mild street port, racing beat header, hi-flo cat, intake, and complete turboII fuel system. along with MSD ignition, 10mm plug wires and slightly colder 3rd gen plugs. his best time in the car is a 14.5 with air temp at 74F, on some weld racing rims with slicks and skinnies in front with interior removed including passenger seat. another friend who lives out in FL gets 30mpg but i dont know his setup. most likely close to this guys setup.

also my 85 SE with 150xxx original miles on the original motor gets me 19mpg

Got an 85s that gets an average of 27. Im not gentle with the car on stock port with just a little cleaning up on the intake and a free flowing exhaust.

I have a freeflow exhaust, no cats, staight pipe. 2nd gen direct fire ignition, running BUR7EQ plugs in the lead and BUR9EQ in the trail. Cleaned intake with a Carter 255lph fuel pump.

Like I said just can't keep my foot off the floor. I have gotten around 22 on the highway though.

My 85 GSL-SE gets 16mpg city and 23mpg highway. Exactly what the original sales brochure in 1985 rated it for.

Roger

(oh yeah, completely stock)

I just bought my 84 GSL w/working air conditioning, disconnected air pump, straight pipe in place of the cat, and everything else stock. With 140K miles, mileage was about 18mpg. After removing the rat's nest, mileage dropped to 16mpg. I think the mileage will go back up to 18mpg if I drive it a little nicer (I've been driving pretty aggressively lately).

All emissions stuff gone, plus hollowed cat. Otherwise stock (except for what is listed in sig). 17-18mpg in city and 23-25 on highway. All depends on how you drive and how in-tune your car is.

My friend just returned 22mpg in his all stock *four* speed (ahem) '79, on the mostly highway drive home from picking it up. In other words, 4k or so most of the way to make 60-70mph.

That's damned good for any stock SA. (The stock carb calibration is rather rich compared to FBs, in order to keep the thermal reactor fed)

Makes you wonder why people want taller 5th gears... the engines just don't need 'em.

Oh and I get about 27-28mpg in my GSL, stock enginery, header, '80 transmission without the stupid-tall 5th gear that later FBs had, and maintaining about 3700-4000rpm cruise. (In other words, somewhat above posted limits )

Well, since the carb was simply swapped from the broken 12A engine, and put right on the new engine w/o any adjusting, I'm thinking it's running too rich for the new engine.

I'm gonna put in a new fuel filter soon. Everything else has less than 10k on it; that's why I think it's the carb.

well i think the norm around here is everyone has their "foot into it" so it doesn't need to mentioned

but i get 19mpg in my fb, can't say i mind the mileage at all...

I drove from Bloomington, IL to New Orleans, LA... and at 95 mph, I averaged 11.2mpg. Considering I had a Holley Blue fuel pump, a Weber 48IDA, and a streetported '76 Cosmo motor, it's not surprising.

In town? 4-9 mpg. Yes. FOUR to NINE MILES PER GALLON.

I'm also not the most "fuel friendly" driver around... My blood type is 33.333% gasoline, 33.333% Jameson Irish Whiskey, 16.666% satan, and 16.666% water/blood mix.

I am HARD on cars... but no other car can take the abuse like an RX-7! It's like the perfect wife! Beat the crap out of it, and she still comes back for more!

I told you all I was evil.
