not sure what this is

Lately during start up when the engine turns over and starts up there is a brief rattling noise. My 85' Rx7 always starts easy but today when I went to start it up I heard the same rattling noise, the engine started up and then stalled and the car wouldn't start up after that, plus the tachometer is not working (no movement at all). Any ideas what these problem(s) could be?

Trailing ignition. (that's what the tach is hooked up to)

Ignitor probably, maybe the coil....

Rattling noise - follow the exhaust, amd make sure that the air line to the cat is not touching anything. ???

And being that it is an '85, the fuel pump won't work without trailing ignition. Thus, the car ran out of gas.

Thanks...I'm will replace both ignitors and ignition coils for a start. It wouldn't hurt to replace the fuel pump either because I think its been on its way out for a while now. Looks like there might be a couple bad fusible links too.

You may want to replace the expensive ignitors with cheap GM ones:
