Not just another (r)OMP in the park

Hey Guys,

So the OMP rebuild kit came in earlier this week and I finally got around to taking the damn thing off my car and tracking down a bottle of mineral spirits to get started with.

I figure, okay I'll take the air pump off to give me better access to the OMP. I'd just leave it off anyway, but I have to pass the safety, so I need to put it back on at least until that happens. Well guess what.. I snapped the head off one of the bolts holding the Airpump in place! Gah! So now I either have to find a second hand airpump somewhere, or find a way to drill the old bolt out and tap a new one in.. I've *heard* of it being done a million times, but I don't have the faintest clue how the hell I'd go about doing it!

So I figure I'll do this: For all you folks who've done the emissions tutorial.... Does anyone have the airpump from an '84GS that I could use to pass my safety? Pretty please? I don't wanna have to go to Rx7Heaven and pay out my ears for an Air pump I'm just gonna disconnect next spring anyway, and none of the partyards around here have any Rx7s... I certainly won't buy it new!

In any case, back to the OMP. I got it off with minimal difficulty, and it was FILTHY down there.. Oil, grit and grime EVERYWHERE. I cleaned the engine block with some Simple Green (being careful not to get any on the OMP, since the mazspeed tutorial warns against that, hence why I bought the mineral spirits). The OMP is soaking in the Mineral Spirits now, I'm gonna rebuild it after supper, and I'll post results when I'm done.

Gah, if it's not one thing it's another right? Oh.. and I broke a chunk off the plastic carb spacer.. hope it wasn't important I have another one, but I don't wanna take that carb off again

Ooh... the good news though!:

I didn't break the plastic OMP lines.. yet... They don't seem as brittle as people talk about, they're actually slightly flexible... not bad for 20 years old... But I'll still be careful as hell putting it all back together!

I have to pull my OMP off pretty soon. I just disengaged the cable to it and I'm running premix at the moment. let me know how the rebuild goes.

Hey Everybody!

The rebuild went *awesomly*.

That rebuild kit was probably the second-best $30 I've ever spent on that car (the best $20 I ever spent was for the Heynes).

I was all psyched out thinking I could somehow screw it up, but between the writup here:
http://www.mazspeed.com/oilmeteringpump.htm

the pictorial here:
http://www.godofredo.com/mound/3-11-03.html

and the instructions that came with the kit, it's practically impossible to screw up!

I removed the OMP using a 10mm wrench for the top bolt, and a 10mm socket and wratchet for the bottom one. There was no gasket between the OMP and the engine oddly enough, but the entire area was FILTHY. I cleaned it off as I said in my first post, soaked the OMP most of the afternoon in Mineral Spirits then went to work.

The Mineral Spirits worked miracles. The grime just dissolved off the OMP and into the once-clear solution until it looked more like a small jar of mud than anything else.

I just followed the instructions, though I originally had a bit of a bitch of a time getting the endplate screws off... So I used some liquid wrench and a set of pliers, which worked wonders.

Oiled everything up with a bit of 20w50 that was lying around, and put it all back together. Yes, it was that easy.

And now I can breath easy about not having to rebuild my engine due to OMP failure

EVERYBODY - DO THIS NOW!

Or at least.. everybody who'se running an OMP for either oil-pan oil or a two-stroke resivoir. It's easy, takes an afternoon to do and most of that time is spent soaking the OMP. $30 CDN for a rebuild kit and an afternoon, or $2000 CDN for an engine rebuild... tell me which you think I opted for!
