Is this normal??
Is it normal, when you are done driving, you step back a few feet, get that right perspective, and just grin and yell "I LOVE MY CAR!!!" ?
I don't know what it is...
Maybe it's when I drive down the road with a grin on my face, because everyone else's car has 60 more moving parts under the hood...
or maybe it's because my 1.2 liter 100HP Mazda can keep up with (and beat in some cases) the 99-2002 civics, integras, and eclipses at my school, and my car is 18 years old...
Or perhaps it's because my back window is really big, so people behind me can see into my sporty 2 seater car, with a bitchin' stereo.
Whatever it may be, I have a true infatuation with my car
How about you?

Anytime baby!
Sometimes I think I'm losing the faith. Ya know - **** this damn backfiring, damn smelly exhaust, damn windows getting stuck, damn clunks from all over the suspension, damn oil leaks, damn add coolant light coming on for no reason, damn weak electrics, damn no A/C in the hell of Texas heat, damn needs new paint, new grill, new valence, new rear bumper piece of ****. Then I wash it, and as the sun is setting over the gorgeous hills of Austin, the light hits it just right, and it kinda looks like it must have 18 years ago in the first owner's garage, when he probably was doing what I'm doing right now, just sitting here drinking my Lone Star and saying, "Damn, what a beautiful car." That's what keeps me going.
Right on.
Right on.

Old [Sch|F]ool
One time it was closing time and i was leaving last w/my boss, and i walked out and I started giggling, and my boss asked me what was so funny. I just pointed at my car (this was a month or two after I got WT) and I said "I get to drive THAT home tonight".
He told me I wasn't right in the head, and then he got into his (snicker) '89 Tercel and drove off. Oh no sir, I beg to differ!

I'll admit it, theres' no engine in the Rex right now, but I still find myself sitting behind the wheel going "VROOM VROOM VROOM... SCREEEEEECH...... VROOOOOM.... (shift) VROOOOOOOM (shift) VROOOOOOOOOOOOOOOM" while watching the imaginary Civic fall further and further behind. I can't help it, is this a sickness?

reinforced all the much more when i have to drive my S10 with a dying 2.8, slipping auto, and ramdomly stalls all winter. 0-60 in about 20 secs, top speed about 90 downhill and about .6g's in the bends to boot. all the while my poor 7 sits at my parents 2.5 hours away with no one to give her the love she needs.

Allllll the time. I walk away looking at her like it's the first time. I know all the good angles to look from to...admit it there ARE some bad ones. Others just don't get it...it's my car, my passion, it's me.

I read your email
I Absolutely love my 7! It's old, it's rough and it's got issues but that's what I love about it. It's a car that's actually fun to work on and besides whenever I show the engine to boinger-head the slack-jaw dumb look on their face is priceless.

Yup, I know what you mean. Even after 14 years of owning some form of a 1st gen RX7 I still sometimes walk around the car to get just the "right"perspective before I walk in my house. The design is classic.
I even do this with my REPU sometimes. But I also realize that some people think REPU's are ugly as hell. I don't mind. I like driving a truck that no one at the stop light beside me has.

the neighbors don't speak anymore, sent parking control, now i have to pull them around the block every 72 hours with my ford ranger, a delivery truck totaled my havana brown gs, just like brownmounds' the sheriff won't let drive until i re-title, but i ease her crumpled light-cover and fender into traffic anyway. hear that k&n pulling air, see the look of fear on those pretenders faces as i shift away at the stop light.

Hey kids, it last forever! I look at my black 1980 that I have owned since it was on the showroom floor, yep that's right, 22 years, and I still think.......what a beautiful car! Obviously I am an old ****. But I love my RX's.......
80 GS since new
85 GSL-SE
86 Base model
90 Vert black and beautiful
and they all run, some just a little better than others.
Nothing in my life gives me more pleasure than working on these cars. In fact my 80 has outlasted two wives, and given me a lot less grief.
So enjoy the RX, it last forever.

8krpm is not enough
It's wierd... I've got a car that needs paint, needs body work on both front and rear, needs tires like hell, and needs a few more odds and ends done to make her "right" again, but every time I open the garage with the key in my hand I smile. Flick the key to start and listen to her catch, and I smile. Hear the exhaust popping when I shift until she warms up and I smile. Toss her gently into a curve and I smile. Open up the 3 little throttle plates wide, watch the "boost" gauge hit 0 and hear the resounding roar of the twin tail pipes trying to throw all the exhaust and fuel behind me and I just can't help but feeling like she's brand new, with no problems, no worries, nothing but pure joy.
and I smile.
Normal? I guess that depends on what kind of car you're talking about... So I can't beat much on the road, so freaking what? This is an RX-7, the reason to love these cars is because they love you back. They give you pure joy while driving. They're well balanced, flingable, and they stop like a F-14 that just caught the tailhook on the deck of a carrier. People that never owned one, or never spent much time behind the wheel of one can't understand, because not much else can give you the same feeling as one of these cars.
So if you own an RX-7, then yes, that behavior is perfectly normal. I quite often find myself humming engine noises to myself, immitating a blow off valve (even tho the car won't have one of those for a very long time at this rate), and grinning.

My 7 tries to kill me every day and I love more and more everytime I drive it.
Let me expand. I drive to work. Sit in the parking lot for and extra 20 minutes just listening to her idle. Then I get out and walk backwards into the building just so I can watch it for a few more minutes.
Almost been hit a dozen times.
Four thirty rolls around and I get antsy. I know I get to go home in a car almost as old as I am, and it still makes the most wonderful sounds.
Vroom, screeeeech, (shift) screeech, shift screech, and then were off.
I live 1.5 miles from work, and my wife questions why it takes me 45 minutes to get home.
"Youve been driving again havent you."

Something about the 7 just hits all the right buttons. Even though I've basically been doing 'test' drives in 20 minute shots to diagnose something, I love it all the same. Soon it will be legal....soon....
Oh, and Yay for living in a state that doesn't have emmission laws (or at least doesn't care to enforce them!)
