Noisy as hell rear-end

I finally took my SEified GSL out for a spin and the rear- end I just put in is noisy as hell. Much louder on acceleration and totally quiet when not loaded. The LSD is also a lot looser than the outgoing GSL unit. Can I pull the ring and pinion out of the GSL and drop it in the SE unit without too much fuss? It sounds like it's misaligned or something, which is my other question. If I swap internals, how much do I have to realign? Sounds like the bearings and everything are good, so I'm hoping it's an easy swap. Can I do it, and what should I watch out for?

Yeah, it's the same u-joint that was on the car before the swap.

I'd see if you could get new parts. If you swap parts from your GSL, then its only a matter of time before those fail as well. I doubt you would want to do this twice.

I'm finishing my Army enlistment and starting school in January. No income means I need to save where possible. I just want to know if I can do it and the truth is, no I really don't mind doing this twice. Every time I open up something sealed I learn something new, so I'm looking forward to it. Just curious if it's possible to swap the guts.

Why did you swap out the GSL RE for the GSL-SE RE? Seems to me they're the same. I guess the wheel bolt pattern is different.

Rearend tolerances are critical, as is pre-load and such. Requires either special tools or a practised eye.

If your short on cash, just put the pumpkin from the GSL in the car. SE LSD's have more slip that GSL's cause they have one less clutch plate. DOnt fool around trying to swap gears, badd juju if you dont know what your doing. Also, like I said, the GSL is acutally a better unit anyway. You'll just be back to a 3.9 gear.

As long as I'm just swapping pumpkins, there's no need to adjust or shim anything, right?

I swapped my GS out for an SE two years ago and it's been whining like a bitch in heat ever since. In my long quest walking the web to find a cure I stumbled across a bit of info at an RX-7 racing site (can't remember which one) that said to purposely allow for a greater backlash when setting the R&P to avoid tooth damage from shock loads.
Since I could'nt remedy the whining (I tried everything from Redline to the most expensive dino along with a disgusting smelling whale oil addititive made by Kendall- all to no avail), I simply left it and live with the noise.
It's noisey.
-Stereo patches, but it's noisey.

Once a gear starts to whine, its next to impossible to stop it (short of removing and buffing/re-surfacing the gears) . Theres a joke in there somewhere but Im too tired to find it.

Looks like the GSL unit will fix things, then, plus I get to pick up an extra clutch. win-win!
