no thermal paste= dead igniters?

Nope. I dont use paste and havent seen any problem. Its just plug and play. Unless you pry out the back cover, but if you did, you will damage the circuitry. So from my experience, its a NO.
FYI for anyone interested, thermal grease like the cheap stuff sold at radio shack is just zinc oxide, like the stuff you use on your nose at the beach, save some $ and get it at the grocery store. There are some very high quality thermal greases made with metallic additives and more conductive materials, but it's far beyond the need of an ignitor in a distributor.
Use it. Just like a heat sink is needed (with paste) for your PC, the igniters need to dissapate heat to the dizzy body. They wont die a quick death, but it will shorten their life. Common sense no?
greg , i think you got some paste on your face! who is your b/f???
without heat a heat sink agent the ignitor will not transfer heat thus burn up quicker than normal, but the ignitors will work still
