Unhappy No Start - Suggestion??

One week back, I heard some grinding noise when I strated my car. It then started up after a couple trys. That only happened if the car has not been started for a day or two. Anyway, I thought it was the starter so I replaced it with a used starter. While I was doing that I decided to change my 4 yr old battery and the battery cables as well. Everything was fine until this morning when I try to start my car. All I got was a click and after two times no more click when I turn the key. All the dash lights work as well as the headlights. My question is can a starter work one day and completely fail the next? Also, if the grounding is not solid to the engine, will I still get full headlihgts? I am at work now and will try to put another starter on tonight to see if that is the problem. Any suggestions???
