no side marker lights - illegal?

Not handy... next time I get another 1 time use camera I'll be sure to take a pic...
Oh and if you notice in the pic, my friend's car behind mine doesn't have side markers. He has been driving it like that for about half a year. Here in ventura he has never got a ticket for it and the one time he did get pulled over, he just said they got cracked and was going to replace them.
