Question no side marker lights - illegal?

I wanna get rid of the side marker lights (both front and rear) on my 83 GS and fill in the holes since I'm going moldingless and emblemless. Would it still be legal without those lights?

Probably be illegal.... I'd say if anything, just fill in the holes a bit and put some smaller, lower-profile side markers on. Maybe even those cheesey clear side-markers... they'd probabyl look better than the original ones...

Yea, i figured it would be illegal, but how illegal would it be? Not all cars have side marker lights do they? Would the inspection dudes even notice? Could I get pulled over for something like that?

let's put it this way - cops are usually looking for reasons to pull over sports cars anyhow, why give them even more reasons to?

OK, good point, so is it agreed that no side marker lights is in fact illegal?

You wouldn't be able to pass inspection.

I know what you were asking, but that's kind of funny.

i'm with everyone else on this.

if you do decide to blank the stock units, then replace them with something more to your liking, but don't run without lights on the sides. i'll offer a third reason in addition to it being illegal and actually giving them a reason to pull you over (not that these reasons have much meaning to me since i cop pulled me over once for staring at him ) ... but it's just giving some tool a reason to hit you and make it your fault ....

just start doing some research and find lights from the aftermarket pool or from another car or something. i know the older 80's SAAB front side markers look nice on the Rx-7, and i've always kicked around the idea of using one of those little button-style markers for the rear ... so there are some ideas. i don't know if they appeal to you, but it's a start, right?

Good ideas guys. Guess I'll have to go in search of some aftermarket ones. Or maybe ones off some other car. The only reason this came up is because, without the rubber moldings the lights stick out like a sore thumb. If I can find a set that sit flush with the body that would be cool. Or round ones are cool too. Thanks again.

Not having the side indicators on the front guards is illegal, the back markers however are not nessacary.
A Vehicle must have side marker indicators UNLESS it has front indicators that wrap around the side of the car.

My '79 never came with and indicators there when I got it, Just holes. I managed to fit some clip in style indicactors from a 98 Nissan Sentra, I just had to cut the holes a little longer and fill the screw holes at the front. They look faar better lower profile and bullet shaped.

Check the CFR

I'd look up and find the CFR (Code of Federal Regulations) regarding vehicular lights. It is available on the web, but I'm too lazy to find the website for it now. I had to research this for my headlight modulator on my motorcycle, as a cop was trying to give me a ticket, and I knew that it specifically states standards in the CFR's for motorcycle headlight modulators (i.e. must cycle at 120 hz, must be overridable at nighttime, etc.) Anyway, I'm sure that the DOT has regs on side markers in the CFR's, its just a matter of finding them.

Don't know about our Northern Canadian brethren though, their on their own

Up here CFR stands for Canadian Forces Registration and refers to the 5-digit plate on military vehicles

Probably be able to look it up under the Department of Transportation too. The have regs that say front turn signals have to be yellow (amber) and brake lights have to be red. So you can tell you local neighborhood ricer that his blue turn signals are illegal as crack, if he hasn't already been pulled over for it like some people I know.

Well, ****, I was just looking at some pics of what the IMSA air dam looks like mounted and realized that having it on without the rubber moldings would look like ****. well, the front two moldings anyway. At least I think it would look gay without the moldings, anyone here have any pics of a moldingless car with the air dam? Guess I could leave just those moldings on and paint them body color, but that still leaves the rear marker lights looking gay. Would it be illegal to remove just the rear ones? Ugh, what a pita

Here is a pic of mine... kinda hard to make out but It's a 79 with a 83 front end with a imsa airdam

I used the lower profile side markers from my old 79 fenders (no side molding strips on SA's) and tinted them.. I have yet to be pulled over and I think it looks good.
