No rats nest and DEQ

So I have no rats nest, no cats, no air pump, no ACV, no shutter valve, stripped carb, ect... ect...

Here's my question If I get some cats, and an air pump with a O2 line going to cats w/o running through the engine/intake. lean out my mixture a little, is it possible to pass? Car runs pretty clean, cleaner than it did when I had all that crap to be honest. Its a very low mile 12A about 12,500 on the engine now. I use sea foam every oil change, and steam clean at 1500 miles, I also drive the **** out of it... so should be fairly clean internals.

Also would disabling my OMP and running some lucas 2 stroke (claims to have lower emissions) help get me through?

I'm open to other Ideas.

Hard to answer the question.

Do the techs have to verify that the proper emission equipment is on the engine or is it a tail pipe test only?

If you run a direct line to the main catalytic converter then it should be more efficient than using the ACV as far as feeding air into the converter to maximize the burning off of the Hc's. Don't know about the shutter valve not being there as it is designed to cut off fuel to the rear housing during deaccel. It may or may not have any effect as when they are doing the testing they usually bring the rpm's down slowly.

As far as the using of the 2 stroke oil instead of the OMP to help lower emissions that one I have no idea.


I do know that as long as you have a good air supply to the catalytic converter and a good cat, the engine is in tune with good plugs, wires, cap, rotor, air filter, and clean oil that I have never had a carb'd model not pass.

The key also is to drive the car for 15-20 minutes or more before you get there for your appointment to have the engine at full operating temp than leave it running so that the catalytic converter stays hot.

it would be more effective to put the air pump air into the exhaust ports, very simple to do, the port in the intake for that is round, it would be really easy to tap it.

depends on the numbers you have to meet too, in CA we are pretty strict, and its randomized.

the air pump BTW does the following

the converter needs approximately a 14.7:1 afr to work right, but the rotary engine cannot run to 14.7 without misfiring. a misfire = high HC's. so they add the airpump air so the engine can run rich for no misfires, and the cat sees the right mixture.

Its not too strict here from what I'm told/experienced. I had a friend get past with a hollow cat. He went in the week before and they said it had a clogged cat, so he hollowed it out and went back. this was on a mazda 626.

Heres a on topic question though. I've been told that if you run some mmo, or sea foam at about 1/4 tank, it will help get you through, anyone tried this with any luck?

I belive its tail pipe test only. IDK everytime I've gone throuh DEQ I've been drivng a newer car so they just pluged in the OBD II port and let me go. I've only seen them check the undercarage for Holes and cats with a O2 line going to them. I've gotten through with a full exhast header with somthing to trick the O2 sensor, high flow cats, and 2.5" catback, you could see the CAI poking from under the front bumper. they didn't pop my hood or do a tail pipe test

is it a dyno test? or the stationary one? the no load one is harder, idle test is the hardest.

The mmo or seafoam is to help clean out the system.

Like I stated if the things are done that I stated in my first post you should have no issues passing the tailpipe test.

If your carburetor has been tampered with such as the idle mixture screws being fiddled with then they may be a issue with the idle test but you are not going to know unless you take it in.

thanks for your help. I'm fairly confident I'll pass. My idle mixture screw has been tampered with. carbs been rebuilt recently. I'm planning on leaning it out a little for testing. Everythings in good working order well as far as my engine goes.

Remember do not lean it out too much as it will cause a misfire at idle and that will make you fail the test. :-)

I've got a few months left. I'm just trying to get every thing in order. since my FB is my DD. Broke down alot in the biggining, but no serious issues in awhile. I've even been working on getting her body back to shape.

I'll update with results

+1 in fact sometimes they need to be richer for the cat to work...
