no light

in my moms 85 12a the running lights are on as soon as the car key switch is turned. Then when you start the car, they stay on and when you turn on the headlights they stay on and the interior lights (dashboard lights) do not work at all, but the clock still lights up and the overhead light works. I already replaced the dimmer switch. What's wrong?

check your fuses, and those magic wires under the shifter boot (search: shouldnt be connected)

as for the running lights staying on: no real issue, sounds like a fake DRL retrofit to me. less people will run into you like that. (and believe me, SUVs drivers develop RX-7 blindness REAL quick)

hmm.. if its not the fuses i cant say what it is.. use a flashlight, you dont NEED dash lights if you shift by ear, and maintain speed with the traffic around you..

or you can use some clip leads and hotwire your lights on.. this takes some electrical skill and some bravery (shorts make for fun.. or fires)

I agree check your fuses. My engine fuse IIRC falls out sometimes which causes symptoms like you describe. Idiot lights stay on, weird other stuff too.

I hate to bring a 10 month old thread back up, but this is def one that needs to be concluded. What was the problem and solution to this car's electrical gremlin? My '84 that I got back into daily driver rotation is doing the exact same thing!

I know it's not the dimmer switch as I have stockpiled a nice collection of them, all testing good in my Parent's 85 which has no electrical problems, and the swap has done nothing to cure the problem. The two wires under the trans tunnel are not connected to each other, either...

bump...how was the problem solved? Did you
  • Find the Final Solution?
  • Decide to just drive in the dark and fuggedaboudit?...or
  • Solve the problem by just buying another RX-7??..
Inquiring minds would like to see this thread closed properly...

I am having issues too with the exact same thing. The clock lights up, but always starts at 1:00 when car is turned on, the cluster lights don't light up, but the idiot lights do work. I know that there is probably a short in the cigarette lighter circuit because that fuse keeps popping. That is the only one. Also I have the same thing as far as the running lights issue. Any ideas???

I did get my dome light to work, and I got my clock to work, but I still have the running light problem and the cluster light problem.

Exact same scenario as mine...if Keegan doesn't get back with us say by January 8th, I'll have this one figured out since I'll have Furious back by then and I can take Tweety back off the road for major dismantling of the dash area to figure out what the heck is going on...

I have been trying to find different areas that it could possibly be shorted, but I haven't been able to come up with anything. I noticed that I wasn't the only one, and so was kinda looking for another possible option.

I always worry about a lifted ground with this kind of mysterious on/off circumstances, but I've never had such a problem with the 7s so I have no practical experience.
