no idle after new water pump is installed

ok today i put a new water pump and thermostat on my 85 gsl. after getting the car put back togethor now it will not hold idle. i can drive the car and it fun fine til i let off of the gas and then it will die. i dont know what it could be.

something i dont get is we use a flat head screw driver to try to set the idle higher but that didnt work. then my brother in laws dad out the flat head screw driver to the idle screw and put a lil and it would hold idle but when he pull it off the car died again.

so can anyone help me out. i do know the car is running rich and the carb could use a rebuild. any help we be nice and thanks for anyone that can help.

ok, first check for vacuum leaks. once you are sure you do not have any post back. feel free to take a pic of your engine bay and the area you were working on and post it up.

not sure what you're trying to say about the idle set screw and the flat head screwdriver... did you back the set screw all the way out? are you sure that you arent messing with the mixture screw? if the engien ran fine before teh water pump and t-stat replacement, messing with either the idle set screw or mixture screw will only act as a band aid for the problem. you need to get to the root of the problem before you go adjusting things that don't need to be adjusted.

Yeah, be careful about twisting screws without purpose. You can gradually walk all the screws way out of adjustment that way. Another problem with "trial and error" methods.

There's a procedure for adjusting the two screws in the FSM.

There's also a stop adjustment screw for the throttle cable itself, as I recall. Stir that into the mix and you've got the classical 3-body problem in astrophysics. If astrophysicists have problems why wouldn't the rest of us?

I would also suggest you do the shutter valve test and also not totally related but check your secondary linkage on the carb.

well something new has started to show its head. i started the car today and as it was warming up everything was fine. the choke was pulled to keep it running. when it got just about to running temp i found a oil spot the size of a small pancake under the car and looked to be to white or gray smoke coming from around the back housing and tranny.

the car stil does not idle with out holding the gas when running with out the choke pulled. i asked my uncle and he is thinking its time for a rebuild. the motor has 183k on it. also water has been found on top of the block. so what do yal think?

Burning coolant. Check the gasket.

Sounds to me like you have a coolant leak somewhere as white smoke means that you are burning coolant.

Unless its a bad hose someplace or your water pump gasket is gone or your water pump O-ring is shot (this happened to me, just put in a new pump and away I went) then that would probably be a rebuild.

Your leaking oil. Find out where you are leaking it from. Start with the oil pan bolt, the oil pan, between the front cover and iron, FMOC lines on the cooler, lines on/to the engine, and oil filter.
