is nitromethane safe?

i was diggin through my dads garage and i found a can of some kind of fuel additive(treats up to 16 gal.), 40% alcohol/60% nitromethane, that he used in his kawasaki ninja(for those who dont know what nitro is, its what top fuel dragsters run on). does any one have any expierience with any kind of nitro additive in a rotary?will this give me more power(safely?) or will it just turn my motor into a grenade?

From what I know about it (which isnt much) you need different jets to use nitro. Or, maybe thats alcohol. Either way I wouldnt just pour it in and see what happens.

Thats my .02

Nitro is serious ****. Lots of energy content. I would be real careful pouring it into a rotary.

it will not give you more power unless you car is setup for it. You can tune for other fuels, but if you do not it won't make any difference. Not worth much in my opinion.

i think i might try when i get another short block(just in case she pops )my dad told me that nitro has essentially 0 octane, and ive read here that lower octane ratings may be better for a n/a rotary performance. so i figure that even less octane will be better performance wise...we'll see

Nitromethane is essentially rocket fuel. Back in the glory days of real hot rodding, some nut got the idea to put it in his engine. The NHRA top fuel cars are forced to run a certain mixture of nitromethane and alcohol for a reason. It is a saftey hazard in its pure state.
Nitro combusts much more readily and much faster than gasoline. It produces more power at higher temperatures and pressures. The cut form that you have is perfectly safe to handle.

Thats what little I know about it, I'm sure a quick google could turn up more in depth information.

This should help somewhat:

http://auto.howstuffworks.com/question642.htm

As long as you're running such a diluted amount of nitromethane, I don't see why it would be a huge problem.... I wouldn't personally try it, but I can see it increasing your flame-shooting ability a bit, being hard on your cats and *perhaps* producing more power. You could give it a try

Do it! Do it! Do it! Run it at night and have someone run behind you with a video camera! Go for it!

Nitromethane works real well for removing cured cyanoacrylate adhesives and leather dye from one's skin.
