Nikki problem, leaning out 3rd(long)

ok a while back i had a problem with my throttle sticking open, no bigge i could back it off by pulling the gas pedal back to normal position with my foot.

that continued for about a week untill one day after a semi-spirited run left it stuck at 6k. wouldnt return, long story short had a buddy of mine help me fix it, but we tried to reset idle, and i think he might have played with mixture screw(more).

WOT in 1st-2nd-3rd is all fine untill
~5.5k in third as if im making a 1/4 pass, it starts to backfire loudly/ i cant heard detonation but it might have been. scared bejesus outta me and I cant figure out the problem, I tried to re-do the problem and tested the A/F with a sparkplug, ran til the problem, popped shut off car pulled plug, I was white-ish but wasnt blistered. The only thing i can think of is that the bowls are runing outta fuel, so check filter right, its fine, i checked and i had just replaced it. Any ideas, should i start playing with mixture screw???

fuel pump taking a *****?

thanks ahead of time,

btw i ran a 17.9@61(2.3) letting off at 5k in third =)

was my first and only runof the night, waste of 15bux

Replace your fuel filter.

That's about the time the carb runs dry of fuel because the fuel filter is too clogged.

Don't check it, just replace it. If it's the see-through replaceable element type filter, throw the whole thing away and get an OE style filter. The replaceable element filters are garbage and cannot flow enough.

well it was the $1.75 OEM replacement plastic piece. I only put like maybe 4 tanks of gas through it, and i checked it the other day after i replaced starter, couldnt see anything wrong with it, old filter was black from debris, dunno how car ran...oh wait it didnt

ill check it, its only 2 bux, worth a shot

A similar thing happened to me and one of my trailing sparkplugs was broken (pretty unlikely if you haven't been playing with your timing though.) I didn't suspect plugs since I had just recently replaced them. I checked over and replaced most of the ignition system, checked fuel system, carb stuff, etc... only to actually pull all my plugs in desperation 3 days later at 4am in the morning. Jumped up and down for about an hour straight after I found the problem lol.

If I were you I'd replace your fuel filter, check your fuel pump output at the carb, look at all your sparkplugs, and then check over the rest of the ignition system. I've been told that bad coils are a likely cause of high load misfire, but I've never experienced it myself.

What I did to test my coils was I went to my local parts store and purchased new ones. When I swapped them in and when they made no difference, I returned them. Helps to know the guy at the store when you're returning new coils that you accidentally scratched up when installing though lol.

I also swapped my dizzy with a friend's that was known to be perfect. If you have a friend with a nice running RX-7, temporary part swaps can be very handy for solving problems.

The mixture screw won't have any effect on WOT running.

What fuel pump are you running? Because the infamous 3rd gear lean-out is usually caused by the stock pump being unable to keep up with the engine's requirements. Either that or the filter.

stock pump, car is BONE stock, bought it that way, so i dunno if even stock cars have problems with the stock pump,

but i have the following on my desk fuel filter, all new plugs(old ones were ****** anways) and on order is a carter and i have a regulator (0-10psi)

hopefully i can get all this done with and have my car running in tiptop condition again.

also since this has happened i finally got the car to idle around 550-750(instead of 1500, lol), since i was playing with the two screws, so atleast something good has come out of this.
