nikki flooding before and after rebuild

stock 79, just purchased... didn't run due to copius amounts of fuel. Used the Standard 1401 rebuild kit. well it still floods when the ignition is set to ACC. pumps hard out of the secondaries. Before I tear the top off the carb and **** with the seats. should I be checking something else first. I am assuming that the fuel pump is fine. but can't confirm it.

Standing on Jeff20B's shoulders, I googled "float bowl vent solenoid" and found this article, probably written by someone on this forum!

You didn't replace the needles and seats on the carb I hope? The new ones in the rebuild kits are usually
crap and can cause a lot of flooding as well.

Yes I did, but under duress as the rubber tips were hard as hell. I used the Standard/Hygrade kit so I was hoping for the best. I still have the old ones "floating" around if I need to put them back. Floats were set to FSM spec.

I will check the solenoid first. Thank you.

Second the float bowl vent solenoid, but also, if the rats nest has been removed, make sure the actual vent line was not plugged. I tore mine apart 28 times before i realized it and my secondaries were a pool of fuel.

No, the rats nest is still there.

In that case, aftermarket needles and seats are your problem.

Another one bites the dust.

As for what to do when the OEM needle tips get hard, it is actually ok to use the new needles but YOU MUST LEAVE THE OEM SEATS ALONE!!!!!!!!!!! Use a spoon to burnish the little edges of the new needles before you swap in the OEM brass inserts which look like a brass rivet (OEM are usually machined better than the aftermarket ones) and I like to reuse the tiny OEM spring clips and maybe the OEM spring inserts too. It depends on how crappy the aftermarket ones are, really.

Good luck fixing your carb.

There needs to be a sticky about what NOT to do during a carb rebuild. It seems everyone makes this mistake and it's perfectly avoidable.

I really thought that the hygrade kits were worth something as opposed to a beck arnley type kit. I also rebuilt with new seats 15 years ago and never had this issue. What Changed? If this is a known issue then why is this still happening? Across multiple suppliers at that. Or is there some Tiawnesse company making these parts for all vendors? Anyways I still have the old parts so Im not fucked. but it is an embarrassment that an enthusiast car group would be fed **** products. I'm sure the Mustang and Corvette crowd would not have these kinds of issues.

The mustang and corvette group are:

A. Much larger in number.
B. Not as smart us we have to be to keep rotaries alive.

I expect it all end up being sourced from a very limited pool of suppliers that all cut corners when
making the new parts.

All aftermarket seats for the past 10 to 15 years are the same, regardless of what brand is on the box.
