Talking newbie Questions, Help me out Guys!

Hey Guys I am new on the board and I have a couple of questions that have probably been asked a few times before, and I searched the forum, but couldn't find them. So here it goes-

- What are the models of the Rx-7 for 1985, and what do they have? I ask because I think Mine is the base model, and I want to upgrade things like power mirrors, disc brake rear end, etc., so what car should I look for at junkyards, etc? I would be extremely happy with a site that lays this all out too so you gus don't have to type a bunch.

- where can I get a rear end with Posi, or rather what car has a rear end with it? I dont wanna one wheel peel any more!

- Where can I get a set of brake rotors that are slotted or cross drilled and arent gonna kill my wallet?

- Which gauge pod fits my car, I saw mentioned that it was a 88-91 CRX pod that fits?

Thanks for the help in advance! I am so greatful to have a site that can help me with my RX, you guys rule!

Oh yeah, how do you guys feel about motor swaps, as far as like 5.0, or big/small block? Are you rotory only, swap apposed, or open to all kinds? I ask cause I have a rotary and a swap. Thanks!

I believe they are: GS, GSL, GSL-SE. The GSL-SE is the top of the line model which offers pretty much everything you would want. 13B motor, LSD?, pwr everthing, alloys.

hmmm I'm not that sure. I think the GSL's have them.. and the SE's also do right folks? Location to buy will vary from eBay to Thepartstrader.. to local classified section.

I'm also looking for a nice set of front rotors. Current choice is Powerslots from Mariah at $210 bucks a pair. Lowest I can find. I'm still waiting for them to answer my email. I think Turner motorsports in San Diego will price match. I'll check on that.

I have no clue

First, welcome to the board!

I think 1985 had the GS, GSL, and GSL-SE in North America. Because you have drum brakes I'd wager you have a GS, though if I'm wrong on either or both of the two preceeding statements one of my learned collegues here will quickly correct me.

From Chevy, as they're the only ones I know of making Posi rear ends. If it's Limited Slip Differential (LSD) you're after, the GSL and GSL-SE came with 'em. Both also came with rear disc brakes (larger on the SE, and the wheels have a more common bolt pattern making rim upgrades easier). You may consider a GSL or -SE rear end swap, axle, brakes, and all.

...um...er... that 'wallet' one presents a real stumper. Especially for a non-SE. Good luck finding any 'power' brake rotors to fit 4x110 bolt pattern!

(I have a tri-gauge setup built into a stereo bracket available through my website, but I don't wanna seem like I'm pushing stuff I design and sell onto you)

The 2nd gen pillar pod fits if you attack it with a heat gun.

Some people love the torque. Others, when asked the above question, look at you the way Osama would if you proclaimed that his sisters were Dick Cheneys love slaves. Run!

Now days there are many good sports cars from which to chose. Other than some unique styling, the ROTARY engine is what sets the RX-7 apart. If you want to do such a dramatic mod, PLEASE get something else and sell your "RX" to someone else! Start with a Miata maybe. They are a good car, and a Mazda, and they start with pissy-tons. IMHO. Or even better, get a Miata and convert IT to rotary!!

Manntis,

There is also the base model, plain 'ol "S", which I think he has, since he says he wants to upgrade to "power mirrors".

i agree with racermike, the rx are the cars to have a rotary engine. This is probably why people like them, because they are a lot different, they have their proper style. The RX-7 are great cars, they handle very good, if you put a V8 in the car, i don't think the handling will be the same.. IMO

In My race Rx-7 that has a V-8 in it from an 84 mustang, I have 50-50 weight distrobution. I had to add weight to the back, but It is perfectly balanced. Handleing is the same, just hase some beef behi8nd it now. I prefer the rotory of my daily driver though.....

You can find the brake rotors your looking for @ www.Mariahmotorsports.com
About the LSD, as was stated before, you have 2 choices. the GSL, or GSL-SE. if you go with the GSL you get the rear disk brakes and keep the same bolt pattern. If you go with the SE you get bigger brakes, but a different bolt pattern. Which means its highley recomended you swap your front suspension over to the Se suspension. Alot of work, but you get a much better braking system, and a better bolt pattern.

Thats what I had heard too, but I went to a local rice shop that had one and tried to fit it...No dice. It just doesnt go on the 81-83 style interior a-pillars. It may fit the others, but not mine. I would just buy a 2nd gen one if you have an 84-84 (which I assume you do as you had asked the cars available in 85). If you have an 81-83, you could try www.gaugepods.com.
