newbie question - removing alternator pulley

i need to remove my stock alternator pulley to put on my new dual belt pulley but i cant get the bolt to break loose. i have a very limited selection of tools. i cant think of how to get the pulley to stay put while i loosen the bolt. i know there is most likely a tool for this but i dont have it and can really afford to shell out the money to get one unless i really need it. so can i get it off using regular tools?

Borrow an air or electric impact wrench.

Or try to squeeze the belt tight (the alt is still on right?) to hold the alt still while you bust it off.

I doubt the belt trick would work as that bolt is usually really tight. I was able to remove it by jamming a screwdriver in between the cooling fins. If you're careful you won't break anything.

Breaker bar...Put a bar under the pulley drive, push down on the end of the par (locking the pulley drive)while someone else breaks the nut free. Works all the time for me on on pulleys and belt drives. I do it every time I have to change implements on old tractors. Hell, you can manage to break it yourself that way if you've got good upper body strength!

Yeah use a big screwdriver and jam it in the fins and hit the socket wrench with a hammer. It should come loose. I did mine that way and didn't break/bend anything.

Forget AutoZone. Get the Sears brand.

Autozone and the such usually will just buzz the pulley off for you for free. They do for me anyways...
