Newbie Question

I'm just learning about rotorys and am wondering how many miles(or km's) are too many for a 12a or 13b? when generally do they need rebuilt? Thanks

Question cannot be accurately answered. All depends on how motor is maintained.

Yea, I was looking for an estimate like "after 200 000 miles there junk" or " if there maintained well you should get 500 000 miles out of it" Or maybe a average say if you looked at a car with 180 000 miles on it and had no idea how it was maintained would you pass on it? Don't worry I'm not going to hold you to it! Thanks

I had an Rx7 with 90k that blew the rear apex seal..... engine needed rebuilt.

I had another Rx7 with 146k and didn't smoke, had great compression, and ran like a raped ape.

As rx7doctor stated, it really depends on the owner. Rotaries are reliable in the right hands. It is not uncommon for a non-turbo rotary to hit 160k miles +.

They are a small displacement engine; so pushing large HP numbers with forced induction or extremem porting will effect engine life and reliability.

However, by changing the oil every 3k, allowing proper warm-up, and not under driving to allow carbon buildup, you will enjoy many years from your smooth reving rotary.

Depending on if the motor was rebuilt, if there's paper's to prove it than fantastic, if not..then it depends on how it runs, I just bought my 83 with 237,000 miles on the body and drove it an hour to my house and only paid 500$ for it. Owner said the motor had around 35-40000K on it, and i know that it's stong, but i have no paper's to back the rebuild up
