Welcome to the forum. Check for rust everywhere(mainly behind the storage bins and under the wheel wells). Post up some pics when you have a chance. You'll soon be in love with the rotary engine and the car alone and never want to go back to pistons. Check out the faq page at the top of this forum and the search button is very helpful. Good luck with your first gen.

Welcome. You're already ahead of most of us by getting a GSL outright LOL. Yeah check for rust everywhere and just do the usual tune up

Common problems to look forward to? hehe...
1. crappy remanufactured starter.
2. Internally corroded battery cables.
3. Low amp stock FB alternator (55 amp?).
4. well, I'd say leaky oil-cooler hoses at the crush washers, but I think 85's had beehive oil coolers.
5. Clogged catalytic converter(s).
6. Possible vacuum leaks to screw-up carb idle; the big hose under the carb usually goes first.
7. Cruddy gas-line filter.
8. Worn out transmission cross-mount(s).
9. "Honking" shutter valve =)
10. (edit added) "Ghost" steer; steering mech. wear.

And even with all that it's still quite possibly the funnest car ever.

Or maybe because of all that, I'm not sure...

My biggest problems have been the brakes in my '83 GSL. Because the previous owner let it sit so long I had to replace everything in the brake system. My '84 GSL I've not had any real problems with other than the starter. And if you got it for free that is awesome. Definitely get some pics of it up.

Guy even has that nice wing on the decklid. That's awesome. Nice find by the way. You have your work cut out for you regarding upgrades, which I strongly recommend by replacing the battery, starter, and upgrading the alternator. There are some write-ups/How-To's in the FAQ section, so be sure to give those a look.
