1. Yup you got open gears.
2. Not easily. The easy swap is to put the entire rear axle from a GSL or GSL-SE. The -SE has a different bolt pattern on the wheels, both have limited-slip differentials ('posi') and rear disc brakes.

so if i got open gears what does that mean?
plus what year is the GSL or the GSL-SE?

It means you dont have a posi rear.
The GSL or GSL-SE have posi's. They were made 83-85.

so bassically gettting the rear diff from an 81-85 GSL would bolt on easily with no mods?

Yes, but I don't remember if it was 83 or 84 that they switched to a larger axle. Can someone elaborate on that pease.

in 84 they switched to a stronger bigger axle. the easiest way to know if it is a lsd is it should have rear disc brakes and not drums. even though people have just changed the pumpkins befor, but not likely. they are great to have and not so hard to find. but they might cost you a bit. or you can do the old fashioned welded posi trick. wouldn't suggest it though. good luck on finding one.

you drop the 3rd member and weld the spider gears together basically turning it into a solid spool. this really isnt a good idea on a street car. keep in mind that the driveshaft changed in 83 when your picking out a diff.
