New RX 7 Owner
just bought an '85 a week or so ago. Does anyone know how I get the factory stereo out? This is the 3 piece system radio/cass.player/equalizer. I have a guy that is going to repair it for me, but he does not do removal.
Thanks

You need to unscrew shift ****, then unscrew the chrome coller. Pull up on the plastic around the shift **** to remove that piece. Lift from the rear of it is best. Remove the two screws on the main trim piece now exposed.
Remove the HVAC ***** by pulling, then remove the nuts now visible.
Remove the ashtray by pressing on the release latch.
Carefully remove the main silver trim piece. Be careful as these like to crack. Go slowly and you should be fine. there are some plastic tabs at the top, so try to pull it straight out instead of at an angle.
Now remove the four screws holding the radio in place.

Hmm, when I removed my stock stereo, I didn't have to do all that with my shifter. Just pop the console plate around the shifter and boot assembly off, pull the shifter back into 4th gear, and you'll gain access to the bottom screws of the ashtray panel.

Guys - tghanks for the quick reply!
Mine was easy once I got the nerve to pop off the plastic trim around the shifter. I did not have to remove the shift **** either.
Question - my car is an "FB" per the VIN. What exactly does that designate?
Thanks

Because the boot from the shifter is attached to the plate. You could pop up the plate and then get to the screws, but the small plastic pegs that hold the boot fastened to the plate may snap.
Also, when you try to pull the full stock radio with eq out, you are going to want that extra room from removing the shift **** if I remember right.

Thanks for the kind welcome Slammed.
So far it has been an adventure - I think it will take a couple of days just to absorb all of the 7 specific lingo.

Just listen to your car, check the temp gauge regularly, check it for any unusual behaviour, and report back here if anything seems wrong.
Keep the cooling system in good shape! Report any unusual coolant loss.
