New Project!! "cheap autocrosser" getting a paint job!!
Guys, I am now taking on the project of re-painting my "project cheap autocrosser"....this paint job will be done nicely but without the details of being a full on show car... This car is all business.
I have started sanding the old paint off. I am using a Makita 5" orbital sander with 100 grit to bust the old chalky paint off. I have removed the side moldings, mirrors, lenses and other items.
Tomorrow I will finish doing the first run sanding. I have identified low spots and will apply body filler tomorrow.
I plan on having all body-work done this weekend and hope to have her primed by Sunday. Next week I will apply her final paint.
Tomorrow I will post pictures of my progress....I am hoping to share what can be done in a "one week" paint job..errr...or maybe 2 weeks!!!
Here is a picture of the start of the project!

If you want to find all the low and high spots use some guide coat. It really helps.
I use it on all my body work jobs. Thats depending on how nice you want it to look.
It helps with finding all the ripples also.

OK, day two of the "project cheap autocrosser" paintjob.
Did the majority of the bodywork yesterday.....finished bodywork today.....taped her up and shot the primer on her.
Just pushed her out of the old barn and here are some pics!!
Next will be block sanding and then final coat!
Hopefully my 1 week paintjob will only last.......one week!!

Well today I will be doing some block sanding and final prep to get ready for the final paint. Sorry Super82....gonna pass on the Primer and red Steelies. While i think it would look cool....something about "rat rodding" an Import just does not fit!!

Silver. The block sanding went well yesterday. I am about half way done with the overall block sanding. I have to wait till evening time to work on the car. The weather here in Texas is un-bearable during the day or even when I get off work.

Well "project cheap autocrosser" paint job is done.
I spent about 2 full days doing body work and priming. Took the car to Maaco and they shot the paint.
Total time for paint job....approx 1 week.
Total cost:
$125 primer, sandpaper, bondo, tape, etc.
$250.00 Cost for Maaco paint job.
$375 total
For the money.....Maaco did an EXCELLENT job.... For twice the money?? It still would have been an excellent job!!

It does not look all that bad in person. I took 3M black undercoat and sprayed all under the front so it kinda blends in. I also bent the bottoms of the front fender in "slightly" to improve the "lines" of the car since it does not have a front spoiler.
