new problem
ok, the gas mileage is up to 24-25, close enough to where it should be, but when I went out tonight, there was a "dead" spot in the throttle, I could accelerate through it, but had to accelerate hard. Then on the way home, it wouldnt maintain speed, any speed, under hard acceleration it would pull, only got to 100 though, but if I tried to hold the throttle at a steady position, the car would start stumbling and throwing MAJOR sparks out the back. WHAT DID I DO???

I don't know if this is the cause of the prob, or a seperate problem. but my buddy decided to be a wise *** and shut the lights off on me in the garage, when he did, I saw a nice "light" show under my hood, the coil wires were arcing from the coil "tower" to both terminals, the wires were also arcing accross each other, and when I revved it, the wires were arcing from the spark plug boot to the block. I know this can't be good, hehe. Unfotunately the only place I can find wires that wont take three days to get is autozone, cheapo 12 dollar wires. I'm wondering if I should get them, see if that fixes the prob, and if it does, order some good ones

I changed the plugs, wires and distributor cap.....
now, when I give it gas, it won't take it, it will stall if I give it too much gas... If I feather the gas, I can get it to take it, then it will rev up. So now the only way I can get my car to move is to rev the **** out of it and dump the clutch

now its doing it again, and getting hot fast
Ok, I went through the carb, put it back on , adjusted the idle and mixture, great idle, car ran well for about 25 miles. THEN, if you floor it, it will pull out like you'd expect it to at full throttle, if you pull out gradually, it will try to die by the time you get through the intersection, if you hammer on it, it will go. If you try to maintain a constant speed (regardless of speed) it will sputter and stumble, again, if you accelerate hard it will go. It also seems to be heating up quicker than before, the temp gauge isnt going any higher but its getting up there quicker. WHAT is going on? I changed fuel filter, plugs, wires, distributor cap and rotor, the accelerator pump is squirting as soon as you hit the throttle (but I don't see how that would matter with holding a steady throttle position. It has a good idle once it starts, but I have to hold the pedal to the floor and crank the hell out of it

I don't know if this is related but, you don't happen to have any coolant puddling up on the base of the intake right under car do you. You'd have to look from the passenger side of the car.

Sounds like you got junk in the carb. The flooding is probably crap in the needle valve, and the steady throttle problems are probably clogged jets. I think you need to rebuild the carb.

I just rebuilt it last night, ran great for 25 miles..... Im wondering if the fuel filter isnt catching anything, maybe theres something in the tank that's getting past the filter, or maybe a rusty line between the filter and the carb. Open the carb back up, blow through all the passages and put another fuel filter in right before the carb???

Could be something deteriorating after the filter. After the filter you have metal tubing (rust), rubber hose, pump etc. Could be from one of those. Maybe add a filter just before the carb will help. But it sounds like you need to clean it out again.

Nope, I'm talking about crud in the jets, emulsion tubes, passages etc. A full tear down, cleaning, blowing out all the stuff.
Most kinds, favorite right now is mozzarella (cause Im eating some) and provolone.

Hmm Ok, I was hoping, having similar problems, that carb cleaner would alleviate them until I get the rebuilt carb from you (did you get it btw?)
Hey we have similar taste in cheese and cars. We're also in the same age range, and our first names are basically the same. We might become lifelong buddies!
