New motor

I have got a '85 Rx-7, i got from a guy who let it sit in a field for 10 years it is in good shape it needs some TLC. i have decided to do a complete rebuild of the car it has a 12a motor with carburator the motor is going to need a complete tear down and cleaned up and remachined it needs new rotoers but i was thinking of just buying a new motor for it, so i was wondering where would be the best place to get one at?

you can get engines from a few different places here is a few

www.rotaryshack.com
http://www.thepartstrader.com/forum/...9dda&board=9.0 there are some on this here sometimes

http://www.atkinsrotary.com/index.php?pag=9
http://www.mazdatrix.com/engmain.htm
http://rx7world.com/

you can also go to the forsale section here on the forums and search there of even post there you can chk on ebay you can also go to www.craigslist.com

oh and welcome to the forums but it would probly be best if you tore the motor down 1st and inpect it and then post pics of the tore down motor and the guys here can help you out! and if you dont wanna do the rebuild yourself Rob at Rotaryshack does them, Dan at Atkins does them, Mazdatrix does and so does Rx7world and so does this place http://www.mazdarecycling.com/ so its pretty much take your pick!

Most of the rebuilders do not accept an engine that has been torn down as a core, it will need to be an untouched short block for the core credit.

If you are mechanicaly inclined, a rebuild is not that tough, It takes a lot of cleaning, patience and measuring. If the idea interests you, but you are unsure if you can do it yourself, order the rebuild video from Atkins or Rotary Aviation. If, after viewing the tape, you feel it's not within the scope or your skill set, sell the tape on the forum.

That $30 spent on the tape could save you as much as $1000, should you decide to take on this mission. And the tape does not self destruct. Sorry, had to put the pun in there.

you are right i forgot about that trochoid. rx7world will charge you full brand new price if any part or your core is fucked. i know that mazdarecycling if there is something bad on your core they take the loss and you dont have to worry about replacing it. Robert has used parts if there is something bad with your core too!

Rxred,
No doubt the idea of upgrading to a 13b has crossed your mind. I've talked to a lot of people about this. The easiest solution was from the local Mazda Dealership. They said, "oh everything just plugs right in". Mazdatrix offerred to most negative view. RX7world was somewhere inbetween. As in anything else, the person with the quick and easy answer didn't understand the question.

And inshort, I went with the atkins economy rebuild and only added on the flywheel. It is a bitch getting off the 300 foot pound nut. The rebuilt engine has lasted 15 months thus far. The installation was easy, getting everything correct was a headache.

If I had to do it all over again, I would have immediately marked TDC on the main shaft! Also they recommend that you mark the pully with paint, the notches are easy to find so this isn't necessary. After installation, I used a piece of white tape. 2nd tip is to take pictures of your engine removal. There's a whole **** load of cables, and hoses. 3rd tip don't bend the 1/2 inch oil line on the lower left hand side of the enging.

Also there are a lot of additional things to do inorder to keep the warranty valid.

Good luck,

ps....$2k on a rebuilt engine, or $2K car payments every two months on a car that will loose 1/2 its value by the time that rebuilt engine's warranty expires???

ATK engines also sells the Atkins Rebuilt. They sell it for a few c-notes less, and have free shipping. And they take credit cards so you have someone to bitch too. Atkins was helpful so I never bitched.
