new fuel pump

i just installed my new carter fuel pump and holley regulator. let me tell you, the difference is night and day. my seven runs so smooth now.

the only complaint that i have is that the carter is increadably loud. is there anything that can be done to quiet it down a bit?

It's external to the tank, right?

Check how you mounted it. Try mounting it with rubber bushings between it and the chasis. Make sure nothing solid is in direct ocntact between the pump and chasis, jsut the rubber.

Man this always makes me laugh. Carters are rather loud. If you get out of your car, you'll still be able to hear it clearly if you exhuast isn't too loud.

The Holley 95GPH one I have is rather quiet. Of course the Carter is cheaper, but just as effective.

My advice, mask the noise with a loud sound system or louder exhuast. LOL!!!!!!! That what my solution is to all the rattles and creeks in my car.

yes, the carters are external. i actually welded the mount onto the chassy, so extra rubber grommets are out of the question. i do have grommets for where the pump itself it screwed onto the mount.. but i donot think that most of the noise is vibration. carters are just really loud fuel pumps.

my exhaust is loud enough when i am actually driving, but it is when i am at a stop that i can hear it..

I'm assuming you used the rubber bushings that come with the kit? If you did then it shouldn't be vibrating/resonating through the chassis but it's still bloody loud regardless. Do what WackyRotary said and get a louder exhaust. I can barely even here my Carter at idle.

riffraff, did you notice a big performance gain too, or is it just smoother? Did you buy the pump because you are running a modified carb, or is it stock? How much did you pay for your carter and holley setup and did it kill you gas mileage? Where did you set the fuel pressure, 3-4 like stock, 2 like paul yaw recomends? Sorry for all the questions, I was just considering the same modification. About the loudness, you could always use some of that sound deadening material. Or even cover it in thick sound deadening along with a heatshield or something. Fiberglass worked wonders in my doorpanels, maybe it will work for a fuel pump.

I added an amp to my Alpine, along with some Infinity's up front in the doors. Now I can't hear the pump at all, except between songs. It works great!
just my opinion,

theNeanderthol: my carb is stock, but i changed the exhaust. it is much smoother. i have not pushed it that much yet to know if there is an performance difference, nor have i been able to tell on the gas situation yet. however, it is a manditory upgrade if you do anything to either your carb or exhaust. the stock fuel pumps just cannot produce the volume necessary. i donot have a fuel pressure gauge, so i donot know what psi i am running. i just messed with it until i got it right. the setup will cost you somewhere around 140.00

Get a louder exhaust system, or get more sound insulation.

Seriously. I have the same fuel pump on the '85 as on the '80. On the '80 you can hear the fuel pump over the exhaust and the radio when cruising down the road at 75mph. In the '85 you can't even hear the pump with the engine running. Difference... louder exhaust and much better sound insulation.

minocqu, i bought the stuff from a local seven shop.

pj, i need to work on my insulation big time. the inside of my car reaks of gas big time. so the noise is probably leaking through in the same places
