New to the Forum

Hello Everyone,
I'm new to the forum but not new to rotaries. I had an 85 GSL white w/maroon interior for 4 years in the early nineties but got rid of it in 94 (big mistake). The only mods to the car were street porting, racing exhaust, and aftermarket rims. I'll have to find an old picture.

Enough about the past. I'm looking at getting back into the rotary scene and would love another 1st Gen. I'm limited with space at home (no garage) and my driveway will only accommodate 2 cars without have to shuffle any around. I'd love to get an RX-8 but with so much up in the air (limited information on the RX-8, will they provide a power upgrade in 2004 or 05, and will there be new RX-7 in the states soon) I'm going to bide my time.

I did search the forum prior to posting so I'll ask the following. First of all, does anyone know of any good shops in the Raleigh/Durham area of North Carolina that are competent to modify a 13B or 12A? Second, other than induction, porting, headers, and exhaust, what are some good power producing mods (too much info to filter through via search - made my head spin). With just induction, porting, headers and exhaust, what kind of performance numbers are we talking about? Any mods will be balanced with the fact that I will use this as a daily driver (no room in the driveway for a 3rd car).

Thanks!
-Mike

Check with the SE Forums, They could point you in the right directions, as they are more locallized for that kind of information.

Without Forced Induction or Nitrous, your results may vary. I will let you know with a "stock port" engine in good shape, you can get:

approx = 150 flywheel HP on a 12A
approx = 185 flywheel HP on a 13B (6Port)

This is with a good intake (aftermarket carbs) and exhaust system, plus the various little tweaks here and there.

With porting, it can vary significantly, Streetporting with the same mods..

approx = 180 flywheel HP on a 12A
approx = 205 flywheel HP on a 13B

Bridge-porting with the same mods..(Not recommended for daily driving)

approx = 210 flywheel HP on a 12A
approx = 250 flywheel HP on a 13B

Peripheral Porting with the required mods..

approx = 250 flywheel HP on a 12A
approx = 300 flywheel HP on a 13B

I'm about an hour away for Rocky Mount. I'm still looking for a '84 or '85 to buy. Preferably under 100K miles and no rust. As I will have to sell my accord to finance this project, I'll need a reliable daily drive unless I want my wife to drive me to work.

On a related note check out the following 85 RX-7 GSL-SE up for auction on eBay. I corresponded with the owners daughter via e-mail. The owner wants $8,000 for it (no this is not a typo - $8,000)! From the details I received in the e-mail, the car is mint but $8,000 worth?!?!?! Here is the link.

Hey, I live in Raleigh also. Try www.cleanandfast.com He is on durant road down by sixforks and capital bvd. He works on nothing but RX-7's and I highly recomend him. Did some great work at great prices. Plus, he custom builds engines and all that good stuff. Check out the webiste and give him a call.

$8,000 is way out there. I paid $4,000 Canadian (about $2,800 US) for my near-mint GSL-SE with the dubious honor of having been Pam Anderson's car for a while.

The only noteable 'fixes' I've done to it have been upgrading the stereo, shocks, exhaust, etc. which worked fine but were stock. Came with both glass and metal sunroofs, complete with valise, factory spare, heck, I even got the factory repair manual, owner's manual, valet key in the bargain, ALL for about a third of what your eBay chap is asking.
