New FB Project

I picked this 84' GSL up the other day for $400. It has belonged to an old neighbor of mine since it was new. Chassis has around 120k on it and the engine is a mazda reman that failed after only 5k. It apparently had a coolant seal failure because when he parked it 11 years ago the engine was full of coolant when he pulled a spark plug. Car is gonna get sanded down and the dent on the rear fixed in the following weeks, then will get painted black. Any parts it needs (Piece between the headlights, front bumper and passanger tail light) will be stolen off of my non titled black 83' GS. It also needs a new windsheild. Interior is as close to flawless as I have seen. Seats were taken out when he parked it and stored above his garage, dash has no cracks, all of the gauges and ***** work, carpet is clean, ect. It already has some mods installed. Racing Beat streetport exhaust, RB intake kit, RB sway bars and a few other small things. Im swapping the engine from my other FB into this one to get it running. Other engine has a Mikuni carb setup and I think is street ported. Should hopefully have this thing up and running and looking good within the next 2 or 3 months. I will keep you guys updated with pictures. Only pictures I have now are before I cleaned it up. Interior still has dirt all over it and exterior still has 11 years of dirt on it in these pictures.

I think $400 was a steal myself, what do you guys say? Mods alone could be sold for probably $500-$600...

Says "Good Sport Racing". Maybe it was a car club he was part of.

Did RB make the intake for the nikki? We talked about carbs and he said he didnt upgrade it. So I guess its still the nikki. I havent looked at it to tell you the truth.

Also, as I havent dealt with any stock carb 12a, what would you guys recommend. Swapping for my Mikuni carb, or leaving the Nikki with RB intake? How does the Nikki perform. This car might be tracked every so often but 95% of the driving will be street. The Mikuni can be hard to start in cold or hot conditions and doesnt get the kind of gas milage Im sure the Nikki could. How much HP will I be throwing away by not going Mikuni and staying stock Nikki w/ RB intake? Thanks

Yeah, thats another reason I wanted to go Mikuni. My black Fb's engine bay has like 3 wires (excluding the plug wires and coil wires) and 2 or 3 vacuum lines and thats pretty much it. VERY simple and clean. However that **** is a mess. I started working on it this morning and almost have the engine ready to come out. All of the emissions junk is out of the way and wont be coming back.

Snapped a few after I cleaned the dash. Carpets and seats still need to be steamed but afterwards both the carpet and seats should look almost brand new. They have no real stains. This is the only 1st gen I have seen with 100% plastic in tact. Even the hatch area plastic is in tact and un faded.

Engine is almost ready to come out. If I could just get the damn A/C pump bracket off and then remove the hoses on the beehive oil cooler... Then reach the bell housing bolts.

I just like black on the FB. But that blue really is growing on me. Its a pretty unique color. I might also go a dark gunmetal grey color.

i really like the tender blue. it grows on you pretty fast. i saw a tender blue GSL yesterday driving through town. made me want to put the engine in mine right away!! i did want to add tht you have an S model, not a GSL. although, my V3 85 is also an S and i'm perfectly happy with it!

Not too bad. I always like to hear someone bringing another first gen back from the dead. Good deal. Now,it would probably be better if you pull the engine and trans together. That way you can replace to input an output seals, drain all the old tranny fluid out, and give it a good cleaning before you put it back in. You'll thank yourself later. Especially if you leave it in their with the old fluid, and it starts leaking. Better to do it now than later.

I guess I was mistaken. I thought only the GSL had sunroof. What tells you its an S? Im not too informed with 1st gen packages

i know its an S, not only because i have an 85 S but also because of the lack of power mirrors, lack of a dead pedal, base stereo, seats(could either be S or GS they were the same style; GSL had different seats), no remote hatch release, standard logicon(GSL and GSL-SE had the "touch" logicon and the S and GS had the standard "lever" type). the sunroof looks great, however it is an aftermarket sunroof. i think it adds a really nice touch to the car!! this might help. its a little blurry but its straight out of the 84 RX-7 brochure:

Thanks for the info. The sunroof is installed well. I have never seen a 1st gen sunroof in person so I had no idea it was aftermarket. Having an S model is fine by me though. As long as it runs the same I dont care. The hatch release is a bit of a problem though as the key wont open it, so I guess I will have to crawl into the back and remove it and either clean and fix the lock or replace it

you can get the auto release latch and the switch and everything is a direct bolt in. the wiring is there for all of the GS's options. a nice one to add is the hatch light!
