a new era in the life of my first gen

Well, to give you a bit of history, I bought my 85 gs last October. I had been in the messageboards, searching about, and was fairly familiar with the rx7. I found the rx7 nearby, and it looked great. Good paint, clean interior, 165k miles on the clock. New cd player, brakes ahd recently been redone, and I couldnt find any surface rust. Too bad I didnt know about storage bin rust at the time, because as soon as I got home, and I pulled up the bins, I saw that both wheel wells were in horrible condition . So, a few weeks later, I called up the mechanic who had recently done good work on my old turbo volvo. Well, tommorow, I will be picking up the car. The wheel wells and passenger side rocker panel have been replaced, and the rocker panel has been painted. Also, the carb has been rebuilt. Dealin with the mechanic has been hell. I have been bs'd like crazy. Anyways, 5 months and $1200 later, and I'll be getting my car back tomorrow. I ordered a set of Tokico blues, and eibach springs from shox, some sumitomo hrt 200's from tirerack, and poly bushings from mazdatrix. I figured that would get me started on my road to a badass 7. I would eventually like to join the ranks of turbo 12a's, possibly using a webber on a ported, rebuilt engine (maybe bridged, hmmmm). I just wanted to say hi, and formally introduce myself to the board. I will probably be posting frequently now, complaining about whatever mess ive gotten myself and my car into at the moment

Right on man, have fun with it.

That's pretty funny about the volvo. I used to drive a 242 turbo and when I got my first RX-7 I took it to my volvo mechanic to inspect. It's a whole new ballgame once you get some upgrades on that thing too.

yea, on the other side its much worse. the mechanic only had to replace about 8x8in section of metal to fix things up on the side that is pictured. on the other side, he had to fabricate a new wheel well. i guess it isnt toooo bad, but im paranoid about rust. Bought an old 1968 911S a year ago, planned on restoring it, only to find out the car was rusted to pieces, and was 95% bondo. how someone could do that to a porsche, I dont know.... I also had the mechanic take off all the undercoating, sandblast the underside and recoat everything on the rex. I want this car to last me the next 10 years, and rust is a good way to silently destory a car. heh, and it bothered me that my girlfriend kept saying "why can I see the ground from inside the car?", jsut to give you an idea of how the drivers side wheel well was

I am a bodyman and I too bought my RX7 SE with the same rust problem. In order to fix that damage correctly is a hell of an undertaking to say the least. Try nearly 20hrs per side to fabricate and install new complete wheelhouses and to install a large portion of the rockers. If I was to do it all over again I would widen the wheel houses to create a small mini tub situation to be able to run much wider tires. Anyway just a thought.
