Talking New to board

Hello all,
I have watched this forum for a long time and have enjoyed the heck out of it so I figured i'd join up and become part of the community. I have been an RX-7 fan since i was in high school many moons ago. I have owned a 82 gsl but it locked up on me and I sold it for parts. Recently I bought a 84 gs off of ebay from a guy local in Texas. He said it didn't smoke, it was clean, and it drove well. Two out of three isn't bad I guess but I am starting to wonder now. My problem is that when I pull the choke to start the car in the morning it smokes like I lit my house on fire, I know this is a RX-7 thing but I have never seen it this bad. After the car warms up and the choke goes back in, it doesnt smoke any more. I am missing my split air pipe attached to the cat so I'm gonna have the whole welded shut and I ordered the plate that was recommended in these forums for covering up where the acv is. My question is should I have to keep using the choke to start it in the morning and will a rebuild solve the smoking prob. Also anyone know of a shop around San Angelo, Tx that rebuilds Rotaries.
THanks again guys

coolant in the combustion chamber =/ there is a quick fix for this somewhere, but the best thing to do would be to rebuild the engine (if you have the money)

White or bluish tint to the smoke could also be oil. If the smoke dissipates quickly and is steam - it's coolant. You'll really need to check coolant and oil levels frequently which will tell you whether it's coolant or oil.

My engine smokes as well on cold starts (and only cold starts) primarily due to aging oil control seals on each side of both rotors. These seals keep the oil pressure from 'leaking' into the intake cycle where vacuum exists under load. When the engine is cold, these seals allow a bit of blowby to occur which sucks oil into the intake path where it's burned with the fuel mixture resulting in white/blue tint smoke that is thick. We're talking SpyHunter car thick! I drive down the road quickly in the mornings so as to not alert the local fire department or my neighbors...

The only fix for this is an engine rebuild. Try to avoid adding anything else to the oil such as 'engine-honey' which will only cause other problems that you don't need.

Check oil level often - every fill-up, at least. When you're burning that much oil, it doesn't take long before your engine oil light comes on and that's already too late. HTH,

thanks

thanks very much. I will look into a local rebuild. I had heard that there was a place here that rebuilt and ported rx's but I haven't found it yet. Also should I have to use the choke every time I cold start it, I thought the choke was just for low temp starts.
thanks again guys I appreciate it as I am new to messing with my car.

I don't know...it's hard to tell without seeing it, but this may be normal. The cold start assist system injects a coolant/water mixture into the carburetor when the choke is used. I've had my '79 since new, and it's smoked on cold starts since day one...and it stinks like hell too!
