New '85 GS owner with a ton of questions, I need parts

I just got my car about a month and a half ago. I'm new to the car, but im learning quickly. Ive already had to replace. Fuel pump, starter, gave it a tune up. And there is still alot more thats ahead of me. Below is a list of problems and questions. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

List of broken stuff i need:
Important stuff:

Yesterday relized we relized the radiator is shot, the heat sink fins have all fallen off. Any sugestions for a radiator? Something under $300?

Also when investigating the radiator problem. Found that the oil filter/cooler is leaking. I've read that this is a common problem. Is there an easy way to fix this so that it wont happen again? Some people suggested air. Which is better?

My gas gauge is out. Where is the sending unit located? Do i have to drain the gas tank and take it off, or is there an easier way?

Should my car idle at 1000rpm? the manual says 750, but is that practical or just what mazada wants you to think?

Also, i never heard a real good rotary idle since ive had mine. Should it sound smooth and constant? Mine sounds like its missing a beat? Is that right?

Thats all the real important stuff for now.

This is all small parts i need.

1. My drivers side window roller is kinda shot. When i roll up the window only the back side goes up, falls off the track, and then points in the car. I think its missing a pin or something. Does anyone have a Window Mech?

2. Had the car 2 weeks, someone tried to break in to my car. They didnt get in, but they did manage to break the drivers side doorhandle, and scrach the new metallic blue paintjob.

I'm also looking for:
passanger side RVM bracing. The motor works fine. But the mirror isnt attacted to the motor horizontaly.

Antenna motor, it just sticks up there!

Thanks for reading this, and anwsers are very helpful. And im sure there will be more to come.

Alright... I'm no rotary genius, or great mechanic, but i will give you my two cents. First off, the best place to get things for your 7 is a junkyard, or the partsbin.com... mainly because they are cheap. If you want factory new parts, and are willing to pay a bit of $$, then mazdatrix.com is the place for you. Oh yeah, get a Haynes manual.

For the radiator, goto the junkyard, just get a new old one.

as for the oil cooler leaking, you might have to rip it apart and replace the seals. But you might just want to try another filter first. If you don't feel like ripping and tearing switch to a 20w50 oil to "slow" the leaking.

Gas tank... hell, i have no idea. My guage never goes above 3/4's, so if you figure that one out, let me know.

Alright, the 1k idle isn't anything out of the ordinary. If it really bothers you, you can adjust it by a screw on the drivers side of the carb. Let your car idle, then play with the screw... oh yeah, there are two, you want the one toward the front. They other messes with your fuel mixture i believe.

As far as the idle, a perfectly tuned engine will idle perfectly smoothly, but its typical for one to jump every now and then. Hell, my car currently backfires constantly while in idle... *Grrrr*

Alright, im note sure, but i think your window is missing a little plastic clip on the front that holds it to the frame of the crank. Take off your door panel, and you should get a good view. While you are in there, you can take a look at your door handle and maybe save it. But chances are the connecting piece snapped, and you might need to replace it.

Hope this helps..

I got a radiator for an 85 GS, I had to buy a new 2 row for my motor swap. this radiator I had works fine, didnt leak, but one of the brackets is off it, it was like that in the car, but still said in there... its free come and get it..

The oil cooler leak can be fixed with Viton o rings, Id say after done they will be ok longer than the car will last... I can get them for about .50 cents each. You need 2

You sending unit for your fuel guage is probally bad. I got one, but it les gas when tank is completely full.. Im buying a new one...

If it idles at 1k, you can adjust it down if you want to, but thats minor if it runs ok leave it alone...

Anything you need done, I will do cheap here in Owensboro..

the cooler may have cracks in the fittings - caused mine to nearly bleed to death and was $800 to fix (Canuck bucks, remember) but I now have a shiny new aluminium oil cooler.

You can get a dual or tri-core for your radiator. A rad shop can recore your rad for much less than buying a complete new one.

is that the one that bolts to the side of the block with the filter above it, as in the 12a?

i have an extra fuel sender unit or two. if you want take a trip to owensboro and come see us. if anything to take a peek at mike's monstrosity. hell, we need to have a 7 get together. we're starting to get enough followers in the area.

oh yeah, mine misses a beat to. hoping to cure that when i go direct fire. might want to go through replacing wires, cap, plugs, etc. also check your timing. rotaries seem to foul plugs easier then pistons.

There was no 83 Corvette. The 82 model year carried over while the GM execs scratched their asses. Kind of like the 92 RX7....Mazda was slacking on the 3rd gen so the 91 model year carried into 92.

Thanks for the help. I'm not really feeling down for the 2 hour drive to owensboro. What if i sent you the money to ups the radiator.

About the sending unit, i figured that it was the problem. But how do i get to it? do i have to take the tank off or is there an easier way?

Thanks

Radiator: I bought a brand new unit from carparts.com a while back for about $150. Nice unit, worked great. The 'tall' 2-row you have now is plenty of cooling for a stock motor.

Oil cooler: Mike is right, if it's just the o-rings leaking you can replace those pretty easily and very cheaply. If it's leaking out the bottom of the cooler and dripping down the hardline, it's probably the o-rings. If you want a better oil cooling setup, you want to get the earlier (79-83?) under-the-radiator air-oil oil cooler. The only reason I mention this now is that if you think you may want one later (planning on making 150-180 HP sometime?), you may want to get an early 'short' radiator now, so that you can easily mount the oil cooler underneath. Modine makes a replacement 3-row 'short' radiator that's very reasonably priced ($100-150 I think), and I *think* the part # is 701.

I'm running the 'short' 3-row and the air-oil cooler on my '79-85 hybrid frankenstien. It's way overkill for a basically stock 12A, but I want to be able to drop a home-built street port motor in later and drive the heck out of it in 105 degre weather without worrying about my cooling system. Plus, the air-oil oil cooler drastically reduced my under-hood temperatures, which saves the various rubber components, and just makes me feel better.

Idle: 1000 RPM is fine, but if you feel like it's 'rough', check the usual things like idle mixture screw ( you may not have one on an '85 ), timing, and plugs/wires/cap/rotor. Rotaries are kinda hard on ignition stuff, so a tune-up in that department may help things out.... Oh, sorry, you said you gave it a tune-up, so you may have already done that stuff.

And yeah, welcome to the board!
