New to the 7 needing some help.

As you can tell I'm new. Never had a 7 before and I'm trying to learn but I'm an addict already. I have an 85 GSL Street Ported, RB header and exhaust, no rats nest, mechanical secondaries, stock nikki carb, Holley red pump, and I just put in a 2nd gen coil pack over the weekend. New NGK plugs new dizzy & rotor. New fluid in tranny and rear with NEO synthetic. Also running synthetic in the engine (It took me a good hour to read the synthetic debates and I swayed this way)

Here are some questions Ive been wanting to ask but I wanted to try to avoid stupid questions... I've done some research and still don't know the answers... Please keep in mind I don't even know anyone else with a 7 locally so I cant compare.....

1) My idle is weird. Sounds loopy like I have a cam. Is this the result of the Street Port? Even though it's a bit smoother now with the 2nd gen coil... it still does it. Is this how the 7 idles?

2) The fuel pump (IS LOUD) also, it changes pitch with the blinker on... when I step on the breaks... and probably anything with a significant electrical draw. Is this OK?

3)The AC (yes it's in and I live in Tampa so I need it sometimes). Since the rats nest is gone, is there anything I can do short of increasing the idle speed to keep it idleing when the AC is on. Once I turn it on it will die if I let it reach an idle. I'm guessing there was something there befor to compensate and increase the idle speed?

4)Last and final (for now) I'm thinking about making my own TT unit based upon the Rat Shack directions given. Kent has me on the list for a non ghetto version. How much of a difference does the TT actually make?

Thanks to all.... If it wasn't for this forum I would have never bought a 7 on ebay without ever driving one... Thank goodness I did.

Welcome to the dark side learner.

1) Yes a Street Port can idle lopey, and when the 2GCDFIS settled it down indicates that is what the issue mainly is, does it drive ok, hesitate or anythin else to indicate an issue.

2) Sounds like an aftermarket fuel pump such as a Carter or Holley and they can be loud, you can help this by adding additional rubber betweent he mounts and the body.

3) I dump AC in all my cars so no help there sorry.

4) I have stayed with the 2GCDFIS so no help other than to say its been great, I get 24 MPG and drive 1000 miles a week in my FB, with RB headers, big exhaust, Mikuni, 2GCDFIS.

As far as the pump changing speeds with added current loads, have the alt tested, or upgrade to an S4 one, it's plug and play, giving 15 more amps of power.

The TT unit makes a huge difference over stock, and a very noticeable difference over the 2nd gen coil pack alone. You won't regret it if you try it once. For the fuel pump, you might want to run a new power line (using heavier gauge wire) to feed the pump. The stock feed wire is a little whimpy. I have this same issue, and that is how I plan to address it. My voltages are all fine otherwise, so I don't believe that my alternator is not up to the job. Welcome to the forum and good luck with your new obsession!

Aussie... The car runs great. Lots of power. Burns rubber in 3 gears so I don't expect major issues (no smoke and kicks over with no problems). Glad to know that loopy idle is to be expected (kind of like it anyway)

I will try the rubber between the pump & frame to cut down the noise as well as a higher guage wire to see if the buzz stays consistent (and consider the new alt if not). Also I'll try building my TT this weekend and post back.

Just noticed a whirring noise by my rear right wheel this morning comming into work. Going to have to check that bearing as well.

Thanks again guys.

Welcome to the forum.

For the fuel pump check your grounds to the chassis. Look in the FAQ or the 1st gen archive for issues with grounding. You may just need a good ground.

For the AC you could try running with the vacuum advanced hooked up and see if that compensates for the extra load oft he AC. Just make sure you set the timing without the vacuum advanced hooked up first. If you hook it up you may need to adjust your idle speed.

I built the simple TT version for myself but haven't installed it yet. I'm waiting for the resolution to the heat issue thats come up in the ignitors. I may end up building it again, its a pretty simple circuit to build.

If you have an old mouse pad laying around, they make great isolators for the fuel pumps.
